Nestled between the Cities of Orono and Old Town is a village so small that most people do not even realize they are there. The Village of Stillwater has a portage trail and is one of our favorite places to visit. It is a little bit of nature right in town!

Take exit 193 off I-95 (Orono) and turn left (if coming from the north) or right (if coming from the south). You'll pass through a set of lights almost immediately. Continue past 2 gas stations on the left until you reach a second set of lights.

At this intersection you can take a right onto the Bennoch Road but you want to take Franklin Street which is also to the right but just after you pass under the traffic lights. Continue going straight down Franklin Street until you see a dirt road before you. Go down this dirt road and park in the open area just after the sign stating: WELCOME TO THE STILLWATER HYDRO-ELECTRIC STATION.

Face the road you just came down. On the left there is a portage trail with a small sign that indicates such. Begin on this path. In a couple of minutes you'll pass a rock wall on your right and then, just ahead of you, a log fallen over the path. Continue on (going over the log) as the path curves down and to the left.

Soon the trail opens to a marsh and a beautiful view of the Penobscot River. Enjoy the view, and then take another small trail to the left. You will pass three clusters of trees on your right. Just after the 3rd cluster there is another path that is a little over-grown. Head up, to the left, and over another fallen log. A few feet along there is a hollow tree trunk lying across the path. Inside this log is the Stillwater Portage Trail Letterbox!
