Now that we have (sadly) returned from the shore, we need to find something "wonderful" about being home. OK, Sage Park is something wonderful. Let's go Explore it!

Directions to Sage Park:
(SAGE PARK CLOSES AT DUSK)
Sage Park is technically on "Suranna Drive" off of the Berlin Turnpike in Berlin, CT. It is across the street from the Pine Loft Restaurant (which is wonderful too... best pizza in town... or try the Pine Loft Salad) Anyway, I tend to get diverted by good food!
The Berlin Turnpike is a divided road. Sage Park is on teh Northbound side. So if you are heading South, you will have to pull a u-turn at the next light.

Once you pull onto Suranna Dr., follow the driveway around the football/soccer field. You will see a "Do Not Enter" sign, keep right. Park anywhere.

Exploration #1 Clue:
While facing the softball/baseball fields, walk through the parking lot to the far left corner. You will see a dumpster, portolets and a big brown building. Walk through the gate (no dogs or golf allowed.) Start to walk across the soccer field... towards the blue and brown benches. To the left of these benches, there is a tiny worn path leading up the hill and into the woods. Follow this path to a "T" intersection. Look at the cluster of fallen trees in front of you. Keeping to the LEFT of these trees, follow them towards the cliff. Look between 2 of these fallen trees for the pile of bark and sticks. The silver pouch is actually tucked into the bark still attached to the tree. (No log book in this one. (Dedicated to Emily, our little Soccer champ!)
Return to the parking lot.

Exploration #2 Clue:
You will see another gate in front of the softball fields... "Sage 1 & 2" Still no dogs or golf please. Go through the gate and go right up the hill to a small seating/picnic area. Behind the benches, you will see another very small trail leading into the woods. This little trail goes left and right... keep to the right... 8 steps down this righthand trail you will see a tree on the left... it is leaning away from you. Take a peek behind this tree to see what hides beneath the broken bat. (Dedicated to Tyler, my heavy-hitter!)

Exploration #3 Clue:
Walk down the hill from the picnic area and onto the gravel path the divides the game from the fans. When you reach the 2nd field there is a path to your left just after 3rd base. Head down this path towards the pond. Be sure to look for turtles in the pond... they are most likely snappers so do not try to touch them. Walk along side the pond until just before the white bridge. Make a "V" turn up the path to your right. Very quickly you will see a tree on your right in need of a doctor. It is only 4 steps off the path. Reach into the tree's big boo-boo... we tried to bandage it with a few rocks. (Dedicated to Angelo and Tyler.. the psycho fishermen in the family.)

Exploration #4 Clue:
After you re-bandage the tree, turn around placing the bandaged tree directly behind you. Look into the woods... Do you see the HUGE tree fallen over? (If not, please proceed directly to your eye doctor for an exam!) Go to this tree. Stand where this tree once stood and reach into its fallen trunk. Hey... get out of town... it's an additional surprise here... this letterbox DOES look the same as the others... but you will have to go through one extra step to undress it... because in this tree, letterbox #4 has company! (This was a complete surprise to us too!) Once you have the letterbox undressed, check out all the materials inside... the surprises just keep coming!!!! Dedicated to "Butterfly" and her grandson for their letterboxing inspiration!

Please be sure to re-hide all of the boxes well... do I really have to say that?!?!? haha.

Sage Park is a beautiful place. The pavillion on top of the hill is also available to rent for events. Between soccer, baseball batting practice, fishing, hiking, and church picnics... we have spent endless fun hours at Sage Park. It is a Wonderful Thing Indeed!

If you have time, explore more of the trails at Sage Park. Our goal is to keep the letterboxing ride kid friendly-- so we do not make the hikes too far.
