Interesting tidbit about the origin of the lake's name: there used to be a farm here owned by Grand Duchess Charlotte during her exile in WWII. When the creek was dammed in 1974, most of that area was covered by the lake. The box is planted to commemorate National Day, June 23 (the grand duke's official birthday). Recommended colors (crayola markers work great): bright red, medium/royal blue, black.

If possible, stop at the county Parks & Recreation office (open M-F 8AM-5PM) to pick up a map of the permanent orienteering course. It's not necessary for this box, but you'll be able to see where you are much better than on the park map.

From the park entrance on Woodbourne Road, drive to the last baseball field. Head roughly north past the baseball & soccer fields to a small path into the woods. At the T, take the trail to the right. Fairly soon you'll pass between a pair of trees framing the path. Continue along the path over two wooden bridges. After you meet Nick, Jake & Henry, turn to follow 46 degrees where the path splits.
Continuing on this trail will bring you to the ruins of a springhouse on your left. The next landmark is a cairn on the right side of the trail. From the cairn, take the trail at 282 degrees for about 40 paces. You should see a large bent (horizontal!) tree on the north side of the trail. The box is hidden in the split of the tree near its unique feature.

Heading west will take you back to the ruins, from which you can retrace your steps. Before you leave the park, be sure to enjoy the views of the lake & the garden on the west side!
