This letterbox is an anniversary gift to my amazing husband of 3 years. Tarrywile Park in Danbury, CT is special to us for many reasons. It's one of our favorite places to walk, it's where we went letterboxing for the first time, and we had our Halloween-themed wedding reception here.

Plan to hike 2 miles to the box on a slightly hilly trail with a few steep climbs and descents. I encourage you to visit their website prior to your trip to learn about the park, the historic mansion, and to print out a copy of their trail map. http://www.danbury.org/tarry/. There are several other boxes in the park, so pack a lunch and make a full day of it! When finding this box, 1 pace = 2 steps.

Park your car at the lower parking lot of Tarrywile Park on Southern Boulevard (across from Immaculate School). From the parking lot walk through two red gates and go up a gravel path. There are signs by the gate stating when the park closes. Walk down a small hill until you come upon several brick-colored, barn-like buildings and an information board. Trail maps are usually available here.

Keep walking along the path and past the silo until you come to two posts framing the path. 38 paces ahead you will cross over a wooden bridge. 40 paces from the bridge, you will come to a place where the trail bends to the right. Keep following the trail to the right and do not go up the grass path ahead. Go all the way to the top of the hill and you will see a fork. Take the southern most fork and you will see the Parks Pond in front of you. Walk up to the lake until you hit a paved edge. Use the edge as a path and walk on it in an easterly direction with the water to your right. Walk over the dam (if you are uncomfortable doing this, there is a bridge below you) until you reach the entrance of the woods and the beginning of the white trail.

From the cut off stump at the beginning of the path walk around the lake until you reach a small wooden bridge. From the bridge continue up the path for 50 more paces until you hit a white trail marker. Do NOT go to the right at this marker. Continue straight up the path in front of you. You will walk over a fallen tree. When the path gets rocky a few paces ahead, stay on the trail at 150 degrees. Walk down the winding path until it ends. There will be a path in front of you. Take a right and walk a few paces. You will hit a fork. At 150 degrees, pick up the blue trail. 27 paces from the first blue blaze you see marker #2. Continue to follow the trail at 250 degrees, over a bridge, and through a narrow, brushy trail that winds uphill.

You will enter the woods on a wider path and continue to the left up a steeper part of the trail. A rock wall will be to your right. Do not cross over the wall. You will eventually come to a brown post at the end of the wall. Continue to follow the blue trail at 200 degrees. You will walk over many tree steps on your way up the trail. Do not be tempted to take the green trail on your right. You will pass an outcropping of rocks on your left, a cut up tree, and walk over big flat rocks on your path as it goes downhill. In a few more minutes you will reach another information board and marker #4.

Continue to follow the blue path toward the "Beacon" and "Back Pond". In a few minutes you will pass the small "Fire Pond" on your left. Soon up ahead you will notice red "Ives Trail" markers on the trees. Head downhill on the path and cross over a rocky water area via the rocks or the logs. Use the Ives markers on the other side of the water to help you find a good crossing point. Continue on the blue trail, walking through a cut up fallen tree in your path. Soon you will come to another tree with both a blue blaze and an Ives marker on it. From where you're standing, you should be able to see the pond in front of you through some trees.

32 paces ahead you will find a blue blazed tree and then you will cross over a fallen tree. Continue to follow the path until you are right by the water where many roots cover the path. You will find one tree blazed in bright blue with a neighbor blazed in grayish blue. 47 paces down the path you will find a dead stump next to a tree that has fallen into the water. Walk 24 paces until you come to a spot where a rock wall crosses the path and there's a tree blazed in grayish blue (blazed in bright blue on its opposite side). Look to the north and you will see a large boulder next to five sisters. Scramble 20 paces up the hill to visit this spot. The box is located here. Hint: This spot is already well loved. Please be discreet and re-hide the box well.

To return you can retrace you steps or continue to follow the blue trail all the way up and around the lake until it meets up with the water tower and white trail. Warning: Continuing around the lake is all uphill! I thank you for visiting my letterbox and hope you enjoy the journey. Feel free to contact me with any box updates.
