Finally! A sunny day after weeks of rain! The cavy, Chocolate Chip (Chippers to her friends) was excited. She squeaked and squealed at her humans. They offered her food. She continued to squeak and dance about. They brought her fresh water. Chippers squeaked in annoyance. How slow her humans were today! She danced some more, ran and leaped. At last the older human suggested they take Chipper out for exercise. Knowing Chippers to be highly discriminating, they knew a walk around the block would not do. The girl suggested they go to Fork Factory Brook Reservation. Though just across the street from Rocky Woods, none of them had been there. Chippers jumped with delight - here was an adventure worthy of her. They scampered into the car and drove to Rocky Woods -- they would need to park in its parking lot.

Studying the map, they noted there was one spot in the park higher than the rest. Chippers patted the map on that spot with approval. They started at the beginning - the trailhead was a short walk across Hartford Street from the parking lot entrance. They quickly came to a field of tall grass. Chippers grabbed a few bites and then agreed to proceed to the LEFT along the trail. A short while later she found an intersection marked with a #1. She faced the #1 and pointed RIGHT, which was a continuation of their first trail. This time her humans caught on quickly and they all proceeded to the RIGHT. After a short walk, they came out to the field of grass again. Cavy paradise! They crossed the field toward the left in order to pick up the trail again as it reentered the woods. Chippers complained of hunger, so they paused to let her graze.

After re-entering the woods, at the next intersection, they saw a #2. Standing with the #2 to her left, Chippers pointed her paw to the RIGHT. So, to the RIGHT they went. After a bit the trail turned left where it again met up with the field. Chippers squeaked loudly, asking for more nibbles. This time, her humans were firm. They pointed out that the trails were narrow so they had to go single-file. What if she got too plump to fit? Chippers was indignant, but finally turned to the LEFT and followed the trail.

At the next intersection, Chippers spotted a #3 to the LEFT. After checking the map, Chippers decided they should take the trail to the LEFT (the one with the #3).
This trail brought them past a huge, very high outcropping - it was on the left side of the trail. Rock climbing? It was tempting, but after consulting the map again, Chippers pointed out that if they continued on the trail as it rounded the rock outcropping there would be an official trial up. The humans took her sage advice.

Sure enough, they came to an intersection shortly. A trail to the LEFT provided an easy walk up the hill. The girl pointed to a large boulder that could be seen at the top of the trail. All eagerly proceeded up the hill to the boulder. It was a magnificent rock, rising above even the tall human’s head. It seemed to have vertical layers. Chippers was pleased to have reached such a lofty spot. She wanted to leave a monument to her feat The humans quickly carved a stamp in her likeness and suggested a letterbox. Squeals of pleasure were heard! Now, where to hide it?

Facing the large boulder, they noticed there were 3 or 4 smaller, but still impressive rocks in a row to the right of the boulder. The middle 2 were larger than those at the ends of the row. Chippers scampered between the 2 larger rocks so that she was on the side of the rocks away facing away from the trail. She chose the larges rock - it was nearly as tall as the tall human from this side. Chippers nudged the box so that it was pressed up against the base of the rock. The tall human added 2 stones to hide it from view. Chippers thought she had found a good spot.

Now it was time to continue on and get back to the car. Chippers led the way down the hill, past the trail they'd come from, until they found #4. Facing #4, they went RIGHT. A short distance later they came to an intersection and a #5. They chose the fork leading to the LEFT. Chippers was getting tired, but the sign for #8 soon appeared. "Don't worry Chippers," said the girl; if we bear LEFT here we'll soon be back to #1. And so they were. At #1 they walked toward the field. Chippers stole a few nibbles and they proceeded back to the parking lot.

Chippers slept well on the way home, dreaming of future humans coming to visit her special box.
