In my life prior to letterboxing, I once walked with a dear friend from Burr Pond to Highland Lake, passing through Taylor Brook Campground on the way. Since there are now some boxes at the campground, it seemed a good time to retrace my steps of that long ago day and leave some plastic along the way.

To get to Burr Pond boat launch, take Rt 8 to exit 46. Turn West at the end of the exit and go to the stop sign. Turn left on Winsted Rd, and drive for about a mile, to the blinking yellow light. Take a right onto Burr Mt. Rd. Keep watch on the left for the boat launch sign (after passing the regular state park sign).

After parking your car, walk back to the road, turn left and in about 25 feet, carefully cross it. The trail enters the woods here and is blazed mostly in white but has a multitude of colored blazes (Jonah’s gonna like this one :-). All red, orange, white and even an occasional yellow blaze will take you to the same place. I didn’t see any side trails so just keep a blaze in sight and you can’t go wrong, although this is a little used trail and is hard to follow.

After about ten min. watch on the right for a good sized fallen tree parallel to the trail. This will be followed by a root system on the left (belonging to a fallen tree perpendicular to the trail) and a birch (with a step sibling) growing out of a rock on the right. Just before walking between these two, site 200 degrees for a large two sister tree on a rock. Look in the front pocket of the trees for A Moose is Loose in honor of our new local letterboxing moose.

Continue on, coming to a "bike ramp" and eventually you'll notice an arrow or two on trees. Follow the trail uphill, and at the top find the faded red arrow on the left side of the trail. From this arrow, walk to the next white blazed tree on RIGHT SIDE of trail. Look right to a group o large rocks. Box #2 is hiding between two of the large rocks.

Continue on and eventually come to a looong downhill (this will be fun on the way back) At the bottom, the blazes are hard to find but just go straight towards the road. Cross paved road, go left and reenter the woods in about 25 feet. Count 65 steps from the road to a large rock on the left. From the rock, site 275 degrees, walk about 25 steps to a tree perched on top of a rock. Look in the back pocket for the Birch Fern. I was hoping to find fern heaven for this stamp but that didn't happen. Look around and you might see a piddling few ferns, they’ll have to do.

Retrace your steps back to your car or continue on just a bit to be in Taylor Brook Campground.
