We planted this letterbox during the summer of 2008 in honor of the third birthday of our cousin and nephew Will, whose middle name is Fox. The box is located in a lovely spot near the sluice connecting Gull Pond and Higgins Pond in Wellfleet. Our cousin discovered this secluded location a few years ago while searching for swimming spots in Wellfleet that didn’t require a beach sticker. Since then others appear to have discovered it as well, because now, much to our cousin’s chagrin, a beach sticker is required if you’re visiting during the summer months. Still, it’s a beautiful place to visit and, if you’re only there to find the letterbox, you can probably come and go quickly enough that you won’t get caught without a sticker.

Directions:

From Rte 6, turn east onto Gull Pond Road. Before reaching the pond, turn left onto Gull Pond Landing, which is a dirt road. Gull Pond Landing becomes Schoolhousehill Road, but remains a dirt road. Stay on this road until it forks – the left fork is the continuation of Schoolhousehill Road, but you want to take the right fork. This section of road does not appear to have a name. Keep going straight (do not go into the driveway of the house on your right) until the road comes to an end. There should be a few parking places here alongside Higgins Pond on your left.

On foot, continue on the path in the same direction the road was leading, with Higgins Pond on your left. There should be a fence on your right. You will reach a point where the path continues straight but the fence turns ninety degrees to the right along another path. Follow this path to the right for a few steps until you approach a fallen tree that sits on top of the fence and crosses the path overhead. If you get to the edge of Gull Pond, you’ve gone too far.

At the point in the path with the fallen tree, turn and walk six steps or so into the wooded area on your left (the opposite side from the fence). There you should come to another fallen tree, this one lying on the ground. The Will the Fox letterbox is on the other side of this fallen tree, hidden beneath a pile of sticks.

If you have the time or inclination, after finding the letterbox, take a moment to walk a few short steps around and enjoy the views of both ponds. Or, if it’s a warm day and you have a beach sticker, bring a picnic lunch, some sunscreen and a towel and stick around for a relaxing swim.
