Location of the box: 5 miles North of Athens, 2 miles NE of Chauncy in rural area

Background:
In the 1800s, Spiritualism was very popular among the masses. The interest in reaching and contacting the spirits in the next world was very high, and fakes and mediums were aplenty.

Mt. Nebo and Athens county have a special link to this world, that is all but forgotten. To learn more of the history behind Dr. Koons and Mt. Nebo, click on these links, though they are not necessary.

Mt. Nebo, by legend, was the mount from which the escaping Jews could see their destination, the Promised Land. Many states and counties have their own hilltop named after this. In Athens county, the highest point was named Mt. Nebo and a small community started there, but it has not flurrished. A USGS survey marker still marks the spot, and the conjunction of three roads is extremely close by.

To find the box, take Route 13 North out of Athens, about 2.6 miles to the Athens County Home and turn right onto Sand Ridge Road. Turn right at the Athens County Recycling center (across from the county home) and start up this steep rural road.
The first major intersection, about a mile up, is "Liars Corner", a small community that is somewhat better documented. It has a location sign.

The second major intersection is another mile and half further and is nothing more than a 3 way road intersection with a triangle of grass, where Sand Ridge Road meets Mill Run Road. You may attempt to park on this triangle of grass and walk to the south,

up the small steep berm through the weeds, across the mowed lawn and up the knoll through the briers and brambles up into the pines. Be aware this is private land, though permission has always been given to those seeking Mt. Nebo. Be respectful.

Alternatively, you might follow around to the right, onto Mill Run Road and turn right into the first driveway. This is a private residence. Park here only with permission of the resident and be ready to move from their gravel driveway. There is a concrete walkway to the rear of the trailer...it is private, do not approach: There was a dog chained to the wood fence in past months. Slightly behind this cement walkway is a pine-needle pathway that leads up to the knoll. This may be your easiest route up the gentle slope.

(A third option would be to follow the car track that runs back into the neighbor's yard, a little further south behind the knoll, and approach from the back, but this is less direct.)

Upon the top of the knoll, you will find a small stand of mature pine trees. More than one have blown over in high winds. Nestled among the pines, you will find a family grave site for the Rutters. Please be respectful and do not disturb the site.

From the grave, walk 12 paces South and find the three-stemmed tree. What you seek is a camo jar with green lid placed in the middle of the tree. (A GSCS marker flush with the ground stands about 12 paces north from the grave. There is a geocashe in an ammo can nearby, that proceeds from this marker.) Please reseal all baggies and leave no sign that you have been here.

Note: There is also a geocashe extremely nearby. If you should find that under sticks at the base of a tree to the west of the grave, please replace it and do not disturb their hobby.

Remember, this is private land and be respectful of their right to refuse us access to the family plot. Good luck.

---FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE OJECTED TO ACCESS TO THEIR HILLTOP--
