The Gurley Cemetery is not in the Gurleyville section of Mansfield. It is on Bone Mill Road, near the Fenton River and an obsolete UCONN water laboratory building. Bone Mill Rd. is off Rt. 44 at the east end of the UCONN Depot Campus. The road is dirt for part of the way but is in good shape. The cemetery will be on your left just after the pavement starts again. There is a road in at the first corner. Go in there and park by the Luckey rock
There are a lot of really neat carvings in this Cemetery, groups of them done by the same carver. The stones are in pretty good shape too. The oldest we found was 1748. Around the center of the old part is a section of Gurleys. This may have started as a family cemetery.
For the box, go to the back wall and look for a twin tree with a big gash inside the wall. Just to the right of the tree, the wall has a slight dip in it. Just to the left of that is a flat rock. Look two layers down and behind a coppery triangular rock for the box. Relax on the bunny bench to stamp in.
Be careful of the stone wall while you’re looking and try to replace the cover rocks so the clues will still be good.
If you continue down Bone Mill Rd. the name will change to North Eagleville Rd. When it crosses Rt. 195 (with a zig and a zag) it will become Gurleyville Rd. If you go a ways down here, you’ll come to Gurleyville. Anyone know why the Gurley Cemetery is so far from Gurleyville?
