Down for maintenance

Center of the Ranch Letterbox is located at General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo’s Petaluma Adobe. The name of the letterbox alludes to my amazement at the size of this ranch which between 1836-1845 consisted of 66,000 acres or 100 square miles for which the Adobe was its center. Between 600 to 2000 people worked at the Adobe, part of the General’s vast enterprise. You can read more at:

The current state park contains a small portion of the original holding and it is easily accessible. Directions are found on the website and the price is right at $2 admission. Hours are 10:00 am to 5 pm.

After you have visited the Adobe inside and out and are walking away from the entrada on the black-topped path sit down and rest awhile on the bench to your left. After your mediative activity pondering the human condition and what you might have for dinner stand up and walk behind the bench. Find the large oak at 310 degrees and walk under it. Stand on the south side of the trunk and note the double posts at 140 degrees. The box has been placed inside the fencing between the outermost post facing the road and another horizontal timber. Mind the single strand of barbed wire. You may decide to go around outside the enclosure or throw caution aside and reach for the box around the barbed wire. Please replace carefully and recover with leaf litter.

Good luck and thank you for coming!
