On the North Shore of Kauai, near Hanalei along the ‘Okolehao Trail

To get to the trailhead, drive past Princeville and turn left just after you cross the Hanalei Trestle Bridge at the bottom of the hill. In a little more than 1/2 a mile you should pass a Chinese cemetery on the right side. On the left side just past the cemetery you should see the gravel parking lot clearly marked for the trail.

Secure your car (don’t leave valuables visible) and head across the wooden bridge over the small stream on the opposite side of the road.

Be sure to look for the Hilahila weed (AKA sleeping grass) along the side of the trail as you walk. It closes up if you touch it. You will also see some West Indian Lilac with small purple flowers and large berries. We saw lots of wild orchids along the trail on the day we planted the box.

The first 2/3’s of the trail is the dull remains of an old moonshine road. (In the old days, bootleggers planted ti plants up there to supply the raw materials. The name of the trail ‘okolehao mean moonshine.)

Just shy of a mile from your car (according to my pedometer) you should come to a scenic outlook dominated by a huge power pole and line that continues down into Hanalei Valley. It took us 40 minutes to get this far…

Locate the North-East corner bolts of the octagon base of the power pole (without a compass: right-side of 1798). There is a 3-inch gap between the base of the power pole and the concrete foundation slab, behind the bolts within the gap is the letterbox.

We continued for another one and a quarter miles to a breathtaking 180 degree view that spans from the Kilauea Lighthouse all the way to the end of Hanalei Bay.
