Around the corner from Russ Cemetery there is a farm where I watched several fox kits play each morning on my way to work several years ago. They seemed to have a den within a large pile of rocks in the field.
Russ Cemetery is located on Tower Hill Rd. in Chaplin. From Route 89 turn onto Mount Hope Rd. going over the bridge with the metal guard rail. Follow Mt. Hope Rd. past the Algonquin Gas Transmission Company and then the intersection of Bujak Rd on the left. Once you cross the Chaplin Town Line Mt. Hope Rd. becomes Tower Hill Rd. Just after you pass Bujak Rd. there will be a corn field on your right. As you round the curve look for the small cemetery with a low stone wall in front and just enough room to pull your car off the road under some large old trees. There is a small green oval sign that says Russ Cemetery. Climb up the steps into the cemetery and head toward the back stone wall and the last row of stones. In that last row you are looking for the stone of Jane and Edward Burdick which has beautiful etching on it. There is a bush directly behind the stone. Go around the left side of the bush and look in the wall for a flattish stone approximately 10 inches across. It will be the second layer from the top of the wall. This stone will slide out and you will find Fox at Play within the wall. Stamp in and rehide carefully. There were some beer bottles littering the area so we don't want our box to be found and damaged! This is a fairly secluded place with corn fields on each side and forest across the street.
Take a moment to walk around looking at the stones. We found a large number of Veterans of different wars buried here and many flags. Most unusual is probably a ring of deer antlers around one of the stones.
As always, please respect the cemetery and the stone wall. Enjoy!
