"Flight of the Dragonfly"
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please read the inside cover of the journal and take one of the pre-paid post cards and jot down a sentence or two about your journey then drop it in a mailbox at your earliest convenience.
Fort Worden and accompanying Fort Worden State Park are located in Port Townsend, along Admiralty Inlet in Washington. It is situated on 433 acres (175 ha) originally built as a United States Army installation for the protection of Puget Sound. Fort Worden was an active US Army base from 1902 to 1953.
Admiralty Inlet was considered so strategic to the defense of Puget Sound in the 1890s that three forts, Fort Worden, Fort Flagler, and Fort Casey, were built at the entrance with huge guns creating a "Triangle of Fire" that could theoretically thwart any invasion attempt by sea.
Clues:
Find your way to North Beach Park in Port Townsend, WA. It is near Jefferson County Fairgrounds at the northern most end of Kuhn Street.
From the parking lot, locate the sign "Entering State Parks Property" and follow the path keeping left at the "Y". Continuing up the hill enjoying the area to your right named "Chinese Gardens" with its open grasslands & picturesque lake & then the sweet aromas as you enter the forest staying left at the "Y".
You will come across old Samuel Walker. At the intersection, countinue straight up the hill as the path becomes paved. Turn left onto the path at "Searchlight Number 4", passing the searchlight storage building. Follow the tracks to their end at the overlook.
Directly in front of you are the San Juan Islands. To their right is Whidbey Island.
From where you are standing, turn around and face the larger searchlight storage building. Advance 18 paces passing the smaller switchboard reostat building which housed the power cord for the searchlight. You will see a small path on your right. Take 5 paces up this small pathway and turn right onto the wee path, CAREFULLY to the top of the switchboard building.
Facing the water, "Flight of the Dragonfly" is tucked under the eave of the right corner of the roof. (Please put back in the same place to protect it from the weather.)
