The Honey Tree

Very near our house (we don’t drive to this spot) is a small Lyme Conservation Trust property called The Honey Hill Preserve. The trail has been recently (11/20/2005) improved with new blazes and clearing of dead wood. The preserve is small and bounded by roads so getting lost shouldn’t be life threatening. There are also several stream crossings without bridges so beware of slippery and loose rocks, also a couple muddy areas.

From I-95 north take exit 70 for Rt. 156. Go north (left) on Rt. 156 to the end where it meets Rt. 82. Take Rt. 82 west (left) for 2 miles. Clark Road is a one lane paved road on the right, start slowing down when you see the sideways “T” intersection sign after cresting the top of the hill, it’s a sharp right hand turn. Honey Hill Preserve is about two tenths of a mile on the right, just before the small pond in front of the first house on the right. There is parking for about 3 cars at the entrance to the trail. You are not far from the Gillette's Castle and Selden Creek boxes when you get to this preserve.

To find the honey tree you’ll need help. Who is good at finding honey? Shortly after entering the forest at the trail entrance sign, you will pass two very large maple trees on your left (the second one with a #1 posted to it), then an even larger white oak on your right. Follow the red blazes with the stream on your left. Shortly, there will be a two sister tree on the right edge of the trail. Each sister has a double blaze indicating a right hand bend in the trail. Proceed 20 steps to the opening of the stonewall. Leave the trail and follow the wall to the left and to it's end. On top of the end of the stonewall is a big flat rock. Look under the south east corner of this rock and find a smaller flat rock. Under the small flat rock you’ll find your helper. Be sure to stamp in the lower right corner of your logbook page leaving room to the left. This works very well on a 3”x5” card. Take a copy of the directions to get to the honey tree. (Go back to the trail and red blazes and follow the bonus directions you now have in your possession). Stamp in and rehide carefully so the next person will find the helper and continue on your quest. Good luck; Sunshine, Swamp Yankee, and the Toad Dog.
