BELLE GROVE PLANTATION: The plantation was originally 7500 acres. The limestone mansion was built in 1797 by Major Isaac Hite and his wife Nelly Conway Madison Hite, sister of President James Madison.
Open to visitors are the historic house and the surrounding grounds which include the original ice-house, smoke house, overseer's house and cemetery. The house has been painted in the original colors and the authentic paintings (dated 1799) of Isaac and Nelly can been seen on display.
Annual events you don't want to miss: Easter Egg Hunt, Needlework Exhibition, Microbrew Beer Festival "Of Ale & History," Ice Cream Social, Living History Days, Antiques Appraisal Fair, and the Battle of Cedar Creek Re-enactment.
FINDING THE BOX: Travel one mile south of Middletown on US Route 11 and turn right onto Belle Grove Road. Locate the first large tree along the right side of Belle Grove Road and park carefully being aware of the drainage ditch. This is the best spot to take a picture of the full plantation and pasture. Under the rocks at the base of the tree in the box you seek!
Also located nearby are Wagon Town and Cedar Creek letterboxes.
