Difficulty: Half-hour, easy flat hike on sometimes narrow trail, with knee-high plants on both sides.

Directions: From I-270, take Route 28 West (exit 6B) 9 miles to Black Rock Road (1 mile past Route 118, Germantown Road). Turn right on Black Rock Road, and the Black Rock Mill is one-half mile on your left.

Clues: Go to the front door of the mill to learn a little about its history. While you're there, jot down the height of the 100 year flood plain. Then walk around the building to the left to see the grist mill wheel, and note the number of wheel spokes that do not touch the ground. You will need these two numbers on your hunt!

The hike begins across Seneca Creek, and you will need to cross the bridge on Black Rock Road. On the other side, you will see the blue-green blaze and sign for the Seneca Creek Greenway Trail. Head down this trail to enjoy a nice, easy walk along the creek. Notice and count the wooden bridges that you cross - stop when you reach the one that is the same number as the number of grist mill wheel spokes that did not touch the ground. From the far side of that bridge, go 52 paces (1 pace = 2 steps) to a large "V" tree on the left. Continue the number of paces that equals the last two digits of the 100 year flood plain height. This will bring you to lichen-covered logs on both sides of the trail, and is the spot where a smaller side trail branches off to the right. Take the side trail along the creek to a large "U" tree on the right. Just past there is a fallen tree blocking the path. Up the hill, in the base of this fallen tree, under some rocks is the prize you seek.
