When I was a child I loved the sign at the entry to UCSC. It's a massive single piece of hewn redwood. I remember it being out in the bright sun at the main entrance, and I loved how the back of the sign said FIAT LUX (let there be light) It was visible from the road as you left campus. Nowadays the back of the sign, and FIAT LUX, are hidden in a shadowy glen of oaks where it's never seen, but it's as beautiful as ever, and more meaningful to me now that it's in a shaded place.
UPDATE! Two weeks after I placed this box, the University took the old sign down and replaced it with a new one, hewn from a massive redwood like the first, but the back is blank, except for a burned scar from a long ago forest fire. Si you'll just have to stand in the shade of the oak and imagine the beauty of the old sign.

This box is placed in honor of the UCSC Banana Slugs. Let there be slug!

Go find FIAT LUX. Sit on the base of the sign with your back between FIAT and LUX, and look uphill across the road. walk up there in that cluster of limestone rocks that you see. Look for a dark rock with two parallel grooves in it that align exactly north/south. Look on the west side of the rock, in a hidey hole behind three stones.

Be sneaky, sly and surreptitious when you rehide this box.
I'm only occasionally in Santa Cruz, so I would love to hear from you about how this box is doing.
Have fun out there, and FIAT LUX!
