Come to the north side of the Twin Cities to find "Big Rocks, Little Butterfly" in Shoreview, MN. From the intersection of Lexington Ave. & Highway 96, go north on Lexington Ave. about 2 miles to stop light at County Road I - go EAST (RIGHT) .3 mi. and take a left into McCullough Park by sign. Drive straight past hockey rink, batting cages, soccer fields, Frank Viola baseball field, and park close to playground with 2 big climbing rocks. To the right of the 2 rocks are 4 evergreen trees on a triangular grassy spot between 2 paved trails. Pass by these trees on either trail towards a partially gated entrance to woods by BLUE "Adopt-a-Trail" and WHITE "No Motorized Vehicles Allowed" signs. Take an immediate LEFT AFTER gate on paved trail and you will see a picnic area and swing ahead. Stop to see pond life if you like, but otherwise continue to the LEFT on paved trail through shady area of tall trees running along north side of playground and tennis courts. The trail will have a rounded 90 degree turn to the south (LEFT) and then you will see an opening into the woods with a view of tennis court fencing on your left. Enter this pine needle opening walking towards the fence, but stop by two tall pine trees with long, low branches on your right.
I think I just saw a butterfly flutter into this opening by the two pine trees and it landed at the trunk of the closer tree and hid under some pine needles and bark. "You found me !! Stamp me in your logbook before I fly away". Please remember to rehide me in my original spot.
Happy Trails to You !!
