An early 1900's barn is a reminder that Goodan Ranch was once a working ranch in the Sycamore Canyon Open Space Preserve.

The Goodan Ranch property was purchased in 1991 and is co-owned by the Cities of Santee and Poway, the California Department of Fish and Game, and the County of San Diego . Goodan Ranch was acquired primarily for habitat preservation and enhancement as well as for passive recreation and educational opportunities for the benefit of the public.
The Sycamore Canyon Open Space Preserve along with Goodan Ranch, including early 1900's historical buildings utilized as a station for County Park Rangers, was completely burned during the October 2003 Cedar Fires.
Four years after the fire consumed a grand opening ceremony was held for the new Goodan Ranch Center.

The Sycamore Canyon Open Space Preserve and Goodan Ranch offers 20 miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails and can be reached via Poway Road to Garden Road to Sycamore Canyon Road (2.2 miles to staging area). Hours are 8 am to 5 pm (winter), 7pm (summer).

To find the Barn Letterbox, walk downhill on the wide dirt road until you reach a 5-way intersection. Take the "dead end" to the right. Follow to a water supply fence. From the farthest edge of the fence count about 25 paces to a lemonberry tree on the right. Under this tree and under some rocks, you will find the box. Please cover well as animals are likely to chew on the outer bag and so it cannot be seen.

An alternate way to go is take Martha's Trail((note that this trail is one-way)down to the windmill, find Kathi K Coffee letterbox. With the windmill in front of you, turn right, pass the ranger staion and then get the Barn as you pass the intersection (now on the left), heading back to the parking area.
