Toonerville Series (4)
This quest is about 2 miles long one-way. #4 (Exit 7)in this series has been retired and the stamp used for the Exit 7 Series called Egrets' Lookout. Look for it.

This Toonerville Trail follows the route of the Springfield Terminal Railway, which ran from the rail station in Charlestown NH to the Adnabrown Hotel in the center of Springfield. Today there is no trolley, no J&L shop, and no Adnabrown Hotel. But we do have the John Deere tractor store and lots of new smaller businesses in the area. There is a motel at Exit 7 on I91, also nearby.

START FROM NORTHWEST END
#1 J&L – From the Trail parking lot at lower Clinton Street (Route 11 and 106) next to the Robert S. Jones Industrial building, go toward the Black River and before going on the trails, walk over to the big sign and read all the “Tips” for using the “Toonerville Trail.” Then walk over and take a seat on the bench at the beginning of the paved trail.

To find this box, stand at the end of the trail pavement and face upriver. Count about 90 steps along the unpaved foot traIL. Then turn right toward the Black River and about 6 feet from the trail is a dead tree about 8-10 inches diameter. THe J&L box is located behind that under a rock and lots of leaves and sticks. Please be sure to hide well, this is a well-used public place, and there usually is an outdoor toilet close by.

#2 Green Bus – Now finally get on the trail and walk or bike all the way down, about a mile. You will have passed a hydrant. Look for the second hydrant. They both are red and on the Black River side of the trail. At the second hydrant, park your bicycle off the trail, and enter the woods. Count 11 or 12 steps straight toward the river, then look to your right. Notice a large fallen-down tree trunk in the distance. Turn toward it and count about 30 steps, during which you will step over the fallen tree trunk. Look for a multiple (living) tree with three trunks and find the Green Bus letter box at the base of this under leaves and sticks. Of course, be sure to rehide carefully.

#3 Baltimore Bridge – Continue down the trail toward the east. They have rebuilt the Goulds Mill bridge, so the walking biking trail is no longer interrupted here. However, continue the search via Perley Gordon Road until you come to the Baltimore Covered Bridge and Eureka Schoolhouse historic site. Look everything over and if there’s an attendant go inside and see the school house interior. The Baltimore Bridge letter box is hidden behind the schoolhouse in the dirt behind a bush directly opposite the southern back window. Please be sure to step away from the hiding place to stamp up, there’s a bench nearby, and rehide carefully.

#4 Exit 7 this box has been retired to make the search shorter.

START FROM THE SOUTHEAST END of this search by finding the Eureka Schoolhouse and Baltimore Bridge rest area on Routes 11 and 106 about a half mile from the Irving Truck stop and Subway on Routes 5 and 11. Park here.

#4 EXIT 7 has been retired.

#3 BALTIMORE BRIDGE - At the Baltimore Covered Bridge and Eureka Schoolhouse historic site. Look everything over and if there’s an attendant go inside and see the school house interior. Look the bridge over, too. Then go find the Baltimore Bridge letter box, which is hidden behind the schoolhouse in the dirt behind a bush directly opposite the southern back window. Please Walk away from the hiding place to stamp up, be discreet and hope no one sees where you rehide.

#2 GREEN BUS - You can continue your walk/bike by going on Perley Gordon Road along the river, or along the highway – both are fairly safe. You will eventually come to the trail again just after the Goulds Mill bridge on your right. Continue on the trail along the river until you find a red fire hydrant. Park your bicycle off the trail, and enter the woods. Count 11 or 12 steps straight toward the river, then look to your right. Notice a large fallen-down tree trunk in the distance. Turn toward it and count about 30 steps, during which you will step over the fallen tree trunk. Look for a multiple tree with three trunks and find the Green Bus letter box at the base of this under leaves and sticks. Of course, be sure to rehide carefully.

#1 J & L- Continue on your walk/bike and come to the end of the trail. There is an outdoor toilet here and a bench as well as a parking area. Be sure to hide well in the place where you found it.
