There's a Point that overlooks the 4,417 feet deep Royal Gorge, and spectacular views of California’s High Sierra country. Hiking to the Point from the Ice Lakes Lodge in the Serene Lakes area of Soda Springs is a gentle 3 miles each way. Allow 4 hours, take water and food. Reward yourself with a picnic on the point, and enjoy the view of Sugar Bowl, Squaw Valley, the the magnificent Royal Gorge of the American River.

As you approach the Point, you will see an old, dead white, ghost of a tree. Before the tree is a white rock, perhaps a tombstone? Buried under this rock, you will find a letterbox.

Beware there are bears in the area. In the spring and early summer you will find wildflowers & butterflies galore. In the winter you will find 10 feet of snow, so this is definitely not a winter box!

Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Area is planning on developing the wilderness area of their ski resort into a condos, commerical buildings and private homes. So enjoy this area while you can. It's days, I fear, are numbered!
