Clue:
Distance: about 2 miles RT
Time: 1 hour RT
Difficulty: moderately strenuous in parts

This is my first letterbox placed and I’m hiding it atop a favorite mountain in the Pioneer Valley. The trail follows the M & M trail to near the top of Mt. Orient.

Directions to Starting Location: From the center of Amherst, take Main St. east, cross the traffic lights at North East St., continue into Pelham. Across from the Pelham Community Center/Library, take a left onto North Valley Rd. Drive 0.5 miles to the narrow parking area on the left, just past a “Sunrise/Sunset” parking sign and underneath power lines. Park at the Sunrise/Sunset parking sign.

The M & M trail starts about 50 feet south of the parking. The trail has white blazes and starts with a steep rocky climb. When you reach the power lines, follow the M & M trail left. You go past some logging areas until you hear a waterfall. Here the M& M trail joins with the Robert Frost Trail (blazed orange). Follow the white and orange blazes now, taking the fork to the right at this junction. Continue past a stream and up into the ledges section. Porcupines often hang out in these ledges. The trail will turn right near the top. To the left will be a descending group of large flat rocks with a beautiful view. Enjoy the views. To the southwest is the Holyoke Range. Straight ahead are the towers of UMASS and Mt. Warner with the Berkshires in the distance.

The letterbox is under a ledge here. There are two white pine trees growing amid the rocks. To the left of them is a vertical rotting stump coming out over a steep ledge rock. Under that rock ledge is the letterbox. Be discrete in stamping and rehiding when there are people on top enjoying the view.

The stamp is a compass rose for Mt. Orient.
