This is a long, steep hike. Easily 1 ½ hours up and 1 hour down. Could be more depending on your pace, or if you have kids with you. Wear appropriate clothing and shoes. Bring lots of water, and snacks/lunch. Be aware of lions, tigers and bears – oh my! Ack – I mean snakes, bees and bears! Seriously! We heard Rattlers in this SP and apparently the local Copperheads smell like cucumber. Be aware of your surroundings and use all 5 senses. Warnings aside, this is a fabulous hike and you will be well rewarded by the magnificent view from Cranny Crow! You won’t want to miss it. Bring a camera.

Our playgroup met weekly for 6+ years before several of our members moved far and wide. Playgroup continues on a weekly basis (just much smaller), so we took a week in August 2008 to reunite 5 Moms and 12 kids at Lost River State Park. These boxes were placed in memory of our special week of Playgroup Pals together – it was definitely LRSP or Bust! We even hiked all 6 adults and 12 kids (ages 18 months to 8 years) up the White Oak Trail -- all the way to the top!

LRSP or BUST:

Starting at the White Oak Trail (old trail head) behind the Hidden Trails Stables, go about 28 bright solid-orange blazes to a used-to-be 2-in-1 tree on the left of the trail. (If you get to the service road, you have hiked a bit too far.) Look to the right of the trail and find the gnarled old giant on the forest floor. From the earthbound end of this twisted giant, take a compass reading of 170 degrees and walk in that direction about 42 footfalls to a 3-in-1 tree. What you seek is in the center base of this tri-tree.

Continue up White Oak Trail to the top of the Mountain. :) Take a right onto Millers Rock Trail and enjoy the overlook at Cranny Crow! Drink some water! Eat your lunch! Make a call while your mobile is in range! :)

Playgroup Pals ’08:

To make your way to the Settlers Cabin, go back down Millers Rock Trail (where you just came from). Take a right at the ‘Y’ onto the Primitive Road. At the elevation sign and ‘T’ junction with the Service Road, go right. Make your way down the Service Road to the Settlers Cabin. If door is unlocked, go in and look around. Enjoy the cabin – imagine yourself living & farming here 150 years ago! Yikes!

Standing at the fence opening at the entrance of the Cabin, take a reading of 90 degrees and walk 30 footfalls to the edge of the wooded area. Continue in to the rocky area about 14 footfalls. Stop and locate the burnt tree at 110 degrees and go to it. From the burnt out tree, take a reading of 200 degrees to the big tree. With big tree on your left, your treasure hides in the rock crevice 3 steps to your right.

The phrase “Leave No Stones Unturned” DOES NOT apply. Be kind to nature, and Leave No Trace. Be discreet in your hunt, and stamp-in away from box location. Please re-hide boxes as well as (or better than) you found them.

Box on!
