4-17-12 This series has been adopted and updated. The name has changed a bit on Atlas Quest but the boxes and clues remain the same.
Clues updated 4/23/14 for Q21 to reflect a re-route of the trail. You no longer need to find the cute gremlin tree.
Another update: The Quinnipiac trail no longer starts at the Quinnipiac River State park, read the clues carefully as I have tried to leave the original clues and just add to it as things change. So be sure to update your clues if you printed old ones.
This series was a dream child of Rubaduc's(with the idea “borrowed” from a dear friend) and was supposed to be Q-1 to Q-22 along the Quinnipiac Trail from North Haven to Prospect but the first planting day was a bust. Using the CT. Walk Book, she and Gizz headed for Quinnipiac River state Park, walked down the paved road, turned right into the woods and then it was an adventure not to be repeated. There were trees across the path, poison ivy everywhere and it was very poorly blazed. After planting Q-1 they made it to the first power line cut but the grasses were above their heads so they turned back and drove around to Tolles St. Parked on a curb and tried to back track. They thought they made it to the Pine Brook bridge but there was NO bridge. After fording a knee deep brook and wandering around without blazes, they reforded the brook and called it quits.

Each number represents a mile. Not being able to plant at the exact mileage point due to many obstacles , they should however be approximately one every mile just like highway mileage markers except there is a box a mile. Q-2 and Q-3 (since they were already carved) were originally released as HH's but it was later agreed that we'd try to plant them near where they belong in the series. In the 1970’s the state purchased and tore down 40 homes along this stretch because of severe flooding. It will not be easy to maintain these two boxes and a miracle if they survive.

Park at the Quinnipiac River state Park trail head behind a rest area on route 15. From the intersection of routes 22 and 5 (State St.) in North Haven go north on State ST for 0.2 miles, turn right on Banton St. Go northeast on Banton to the end and ample parking.

Rubaduc strongly recommended NOT doing the Q-1 box but the trail is improved and shows some signs of repair and remarking, as far as the first mile or so. Follow blue as best you can until you come to a small uphill leading into a pine grove. At the top count three pines on the left and look right to a log with a 3 foot cement block in front of it. Look behind the HEAVY block for Q-1. This is near the 1st mile mark where the walk book says you look down on the Wilbur Cross Parkway and then start to descend.

The original clues said: The path to Q-2 begins easy enough but quickly turns to a maze of downed trees, poor markers, swamps, flood plains and poison ivy. From box 1 you will travel a mile according to my gps. You'll come to a tire on the ground on the right, then a blazed four sister shag bark tree on the left, with two sisters being conjoined. In their center is Q-2. Please cover well. If you get to the utility clearing, you went to far. At least that's what the clues USED to say! The new revised clues say go to box one and you'll understand how to get box two.

The original clues said: Follow the rest of the trail in the walk book (but not on foot unless you‘re very, very brave) cross a utility cut, cross a dirt road , cross (or swim) over Pine Brook.
At the north side of the brook you'll find a 2 sister tree on the left at a sandy path with two sets of blue blazes indicating a turn in the trail. Look between the sisters. This box is propped up with a dead tree on top and branch at the bottom to keep it in place. If it falls to the ground it will be washed away in the next flood so please do your best to keep it off the ground. (I recommend coming to this box from Q-4, in which case you will come to the two sister in .83 miles, give or take a little for wandering off trail)
Cross another utility cut until you finally come up out of a gully just before four miles and Tolles Road. Look right for a Connecticut Greenways sign on a tree at the top of the hill. Take 36 steps to an oak on the left 10 feet from the trail and just before a pile of discarded black top. Look behind the oak under a flat rock and brush for Q-4. Recover well.

At Tolles road, go left passing under the Wilbur Cross Parkway (BE CAREFUL!). Then turn left on Old Hartford Turnpike and right at the trail head going into the woods on the blue trail and Sleeping Giant State Park
The new updated clues (april 2020) reflect a change in the trail. The Quinnipiac Trail now starts on Hartford Turnpike. There is parking for ONE car at the trail head across from 2111 Hartford Turnpike. So after finding box one and two, picture yourself walking along the trail, and then get in your car and drive to the new trailhead.

Head up hill on blue. Shortly before the top of the first incline, there is a blue blaze tree on the right, with a three sister just near it. Stop, look trail side left and up the hill about 25 steps is a scraggy ledge or boulder. On the left side, under an overhang in a nest of rocks , your prizes await. Be sure to cover with one rock and don't let anything slide down the hill.

Continue on blue, ascending and then descending to cross over a funky bridge with both a ramp and steps. From the bridge take 50 steps to a two sister tree on the right with a round flat top boulder behind it. Look behind the boulder for Q-5.

Cross Chestnut Lane, cross yellow trail, cross horse trail, cross orange trail and watch on the left for a mottled round topped boulder with a leaning tree behind it. Look DEEP in the hole of this tree for Q-6.

Start to ascend and reach Heze-Kiah’s Knob and descend. Cross green trail, cross seasonal stream, cross red square trail and go uphill. As the trail curves to the left (half of an S curve) and levels out, watch for a four sister tree on the left. There are several in this area but the one you want is 25 feet off trail just before the unmarked trail on the right. Look in the center for Q-7.

Continue towards the tower and seconds before it comes into view (during full foliage seasons) and just before an unmarked trail on the left watch for a rock sticking up in the middle of the trail just waiting to trip you. Stand on the rock (it’s a bit pointed so balance carefully) site 290 degrees, walk 17 steps to a pile of boulders (six?) Look in the center for Q-8.

Continue on traversing the Giant’s chest and chin, finally descending the head. Cross over a small knob and come to a steep rock cliff. Look up and start climbing . After it levels off watch on the ledge under your feet for a blue arrow. Do not turn but stay straight for 18 steps and look right for a two sister tree with a relative behind her. Look behind to find (jammed into the "ball") behind a rock Q-9.

Continue downhill on Blue, along the river, cross the bridge, turn right, re-entering the park, cross route 10, turn west onto West Woods Road, left on Kimberly Road and in 0.4 miles, turn right into the woods. Go around the gate (no blazes at first) pass an open area (community gardens?) with an old shack (ignore the trash) go uphill.
20 steps before an intersection with an unmarked trail on the right (at a T?) look right for a two sister tree with a pile of small rocks on the side of it’s base hiding Q-10. Cover well.

Continue going up (left at that intersection) reach the top of Rocky Top and descend. Just as you’re enjoying the woods..........BAM, Devastation Central. Looks like an atomic test area? Everything is destroyed in the name of progress but if you sort your way straight through you’ll come to the tree line. Follow this down to the street and you’ll see a tree on the left with a blank blue sign. Look behind this, flush with the ground for Q-11.

Turn right on Rocky Top Road, turn left onto Shepard Ave. Turn right onto Nolan Road and then right again onto Old Coach Highway. Bear left and enter the woods, cross Shepard Brook and ascend slope. Turn left onto service road, reach north end of Paradise Ave, walk a short distance and reenter the woods on the right. Go uphill, cross the remains of a stonewall and after coming to the remains of a second stone wall (before you cross the gully) follow the wall to the right until you come to a ledge. Look rightish to find Q-12 in the roots around the back of a small tree perched on the lower edge of this ledge.

Continue up to the summit of York Mountain. Watch for a side trail on the left. Lots of blue blazes and signs here. After passing the signs (stay on the Quinnipiac Trail) watch for a hip high stump, trail side left(this may be missing now, so watch for a few rocks to climb down) followed by two/ two sister trees. The second one has large rocks behind it and Q-13 is hiding in an overhang under the one nearest the tree.

Walk along the ridge line with views at an overlook and then descend steeply to Bethany Gap. Turn right and then almost immediately left back into the woods. Ascend steeply (these ascends are getting steeper) and after leveling out for a ways, watch for a blue arrow underfoot (there will be another less prominent one a little more along the trail). Look right to find Q-14 under an overhang of large rock next to a two sister tree.

Continue on for a mile, some ups and downs with a few views until you walk under a power line. Go straight across to reenter woods and watch for a multi trunked tree on the right. Look under some rocks on the N.W. side for Q-15.

Go downhill, cross gas line cut and descend gradually to a very large stone wall on the left. On the far side of the wall, walk 15 steps to look behind a tree (NOT IN THE WALL) under a flat rock for Q-16.

Continue to Downs Road, turn right, cross Gaylord Mountain Road, enter the woods on the left (this is new as of 3/20. Follow blue, stay left were blue meets the blue with red dot trail, pass Ogham q and head uphill. At a slightly level area spot a three sister on the right and look in the center for Q-17.

Continue on, this next box closer then a mile. When you finally feel like you’re at the top (just as the trail levels out but not at the wonderful view) look left for a rocky ledge with a yellow Water Supply sign on a tree in back of it. Note: disregard earlier notes about the sign missing. Go up and over the ledge, face the tree and look left. (new clues, 2020) There are a few rocks on the ground with yellow paint. In the center of the yellow cluster under an overhang of the rock is Q-18.

Continue on , stopping to admire the view, go downhill and then STEEPLY up to the summit of Mt. Sanford. Descend passing the blue with red dot trail on the right , take 70 to 75 steps to a tree with a blue blaze on it in the middle of the trail. Uphill to the left is a beech tree and beyond that a birch (?) hugging a rock about 6-8 feet off trail. Look in the roots in back of this tree for Q-19.

Continue downhill. Cross bridge and come to Bethany Mt. Road. Go right along road (behind the guardrails on the right is a nice path) for a short way, reenter the woods on the left and ascend hill, eventually descending a very STEEP but short trap rock hill with a horse pasture on the left at the foot of it. Go uphill until you come to a good size pine tree in the middle of the trail. Take 6 steps along to a Cedar tree with two small boulders behind it. Look between these boulders for Q-20.

Continue on, passing through Roaring Brook Falls and climbing uphill with a nice stonewall beside of you. This wall will end but soon you come to another, go down and around the end of this one , cross a couple stream beds (dry today) and eventually go up quite a STEEP rocky hill. At the top, the path levels off for a short distance. In the middle of this level section, you'll see a rocky knoll on the left. In the split of the highest rock on the knoll es Q21. Beyond the flat section is a double blazed tree indicating a right turn that will take you up to the rock where you'll find "Q"uiet on the set: Rod Serling, so if you get to him, you've gone to far.

To find the final box, simply follow the trail and at the foot of a pretty steep hill, at the old stagecoach road, look for a boundary marker. There’s a picture of it in the walk book and it helped us to find it. Stand with the P to your left, walk straight to the double blazed tree, with your left shoulder to this tree look for the root end of a short fat log. Reaching into this cavity will net you Q-22.

The final mile of the Quinnipiac Trail is along several paved roads, ending at route 68 in Prospect.
