Find this Letterbox day or night. Just bring a flashlight at night, you shouldn’t be disappointed either way. It does help if the sky is clear.
While Driving down Highway 30 through Scappoose Oregon in Columbia County keep an eye out for J.P. West Road on the opposite side of the road than the police station. This road starts next to a car wash and gas station, near Precision engraving.
At the stop sign you will see a four square church, continue straight up the road which leads up the hill. This is still J.P. West. Travel just under two miles. This road gets sleep but it’s the right one. Watch out for quail and deer. You will pass Eastview (dead end) on the right, Keys Rd. on the left, Luma Vista Dr. on the right. When you are close you will pass the address 31993, with a chain link fence, then 31850 shortly after, and finally another driveway on your right.
The logging road you are looking for is on the left-hand side of the road. From down the road the bushes may hide it but once close enough its obvious. Just past this up the hill on the right is a sign marked “School bus turn around.” The power line should just cross the road here too. If you come to an intersection with the road Mt. View turn around.
Pull into the logging road and park. Just ahead is a gate and a lot of garbage, beer cans, and cigarettes. Try to ignore the trash and think of something better.
From the gate walk 165-175 steps. I walked on the left-hand side. It shouldn’t really matter because you’ll come to the end of the road. On your right there may be what looks like ruts from the locals. Also take in the shotgun shells at your feet and the broken glass. Just past this are a few trees. Behind the one closest should be a few logs and under it some rocks then the letter box.
Portland is on the right when you turn around and ahead is a nice view of the local agriculture and wetlands.
