Secret Sanctuary

I have been in this area for 35 years, and never knew of this spot before! Enjoy!

From Goose Lane, take Clapboard Hill Road .8 miles to the Meadowlands neighorhood on the right (a very lovely area). The sign says “private”, but there is also a tiny sign indicating parking, to the right. Go right .2 miles to parking on the right, with a signboard explaining the Guilford Salt Marsh Sancutary, an Audubon property. This is a level walk, which should take 40 minutes or left to complete.

Follow the mown path to the “Forest Edge” opening. Cross a plank, traipse along the saltmarsh, and see some racked kayaks. To their right, go slightly uphill to the largest tree. Look behind it for the Carefree Kayak.

Come to a bench. Just past it is a rock outcropping, with two trees in front of it. Look behind the tree that is to the right.

You will be hiking through some lovely backyards! Stick to the main trail. There will be one slightly damp across to trek through. Next, come to an observation point a little way up the trail. Find two trees there with little space between them; look under one of them, under a rock, for the Happy Heron. If you continue on the trail, you will end up back on Clapboard Hill Road, but it may be easier and more scenic to go back the way you came.

Nice spot, isn’t it?
