This is the first part of a future 3 part letterbox trail in the woods behind Amherst College.
This letterbox by itself will take about 15 minutes to find. Easy terrain and child friendly.

From the Amherst town common you need to take route 9 east which will make the main part of Amherst College be on your right hand side.
Turn right onto Dickinson St. (just before you go under the railway bridge). Follow this down with the train track running along on your left hand side. After 500yds you’ll come to the end of the student residences on your right and the tennis courts will be in front of you and to the right. Park before the gate that says “No Vehicles Beyond this point!”

Proceed past the green work shop ( left) and tennis courts ( right). Counting 50 paces from the white gas tank on the left you’ll come to the wide track leading into the woods.
This path crosses under electric lines and into the woods again. After approx. 5 mins. you’ll pass a ‘secret garden’ on your left. Another track comes in from the left…keep straight until you come to a fork in the track.
Keep right.
After maybe 100yds there’s an old wooden bench on your left.
Behind the bench is a large tree.
The farmhouse butterfly bee is hidden in the roots of this tree.

Stamp, re-seal and replace the letterbox very carefully for the next treasure hunter to find.

Return to the last junction/fork (where you previously turned right) and follow the path up the ‘hill’. At the next fork take the right hand fork until you arrive at the paved road at the top. Make your way around to the end of the paved drive with the view out over the valley. Great place for a picnic.
There was a magnificent old house here until Spring ’08 when it was moved to Main Street ( opposite Wunderarts Gallery) in the center of Amherst. Quite an undertaking!

From this lookout take a bearing SSE across the field following the obvious path that runs down to an old stone boundary/hedge line. Before crossing into the next field, stand ‘in the boundary’ facing down hill, and walk along the old ‘wall’ for 25 small strides until you spot a stone that’s been set on it’s edge as a marker. Buried there is the Grasshopper (box 2). Please replace this as you found it with the marker stone firmly in place.
(There is a little bit of old barbed wire here. I tried to clear it away as well as I could but please be careful with the little ones).

Continue along the path to the end of the field and follow the track around to the right, across a small stream and across the bike path into what we call the ‘birdhouse field’ for obvious reasons!

NEW CLUE FOR BOX 3!!!!!!!!!!!!
Follow the path along the top hedge line with the wonderful view across the birdhouse field to your left. After a little walk you'll come to an opening in the hedge on your right that'll take you back up onto the bike path. Go up here paying close attention to the last 'three trunk tree' on your right hand side as you go up the slope. Here you'll find the 'perfect spot for tea'..hopefully dry this time.

Replace carefully as you found it.
From here you can continue down the bike path until you come to the college tennis courts, or cross the bike path. This path will take you back to the old wooden bench where you found box one. From there you can find your way back to the start.

Good luck !
