This last Summer Birder ( Oregon Letterboxer) gave us his old personal stamp to hide and we gave him one of ours (see Metolious Goose).

While the area around Kern Valley can not compare to that of the Metolious River, we figured that the most appropriate location for one of Birder’s creations would be the Audubon Society’s “Preserve”. The Preserve is located about 1 mile from the intersection of Hwy 178 and Sierra Way. Sierra Way is the Easterly road heading to Kernville.

We knew full well that Buzzard had planted two boxes there and that one of them was probably missing. Unfortunately we failed to print out Buzzard’s “Preserve” clue sheet prior to heading out. DUH!

We hit the trail early in the morning and shortly (7 steps) past marker #10 we found a prone log on the left with an opening in front. We put the letterbox in the hole and put some tree stuff covering the box.

Just before we posted this clue I checked Buzzard’s "Preserve" clue sheet and noticed he used the very same prone log but instead on the front hole he put it around to the SE end.

Temperatures are reported to be hitting 106 degrees today so the plant will stand as we aren’t going out and replant in this heat. Sorry bout that Buzzard!

When researching our clues please be aware that when previous searchers list “ATTEMPTED” on the clue sheets it may reflect more on their abilities as finders than indicate whether the box is viable or not. We do monitor our clues and boxes pretty well and appreciate the notes written to us by those that find or attempt our letterboxes.
