FROM SPRINGFIELD - Take 91 North. Take the RT-9 exit – exit number 19 toward NORTHAMPTON/AMHERST. Turn right at the end of the ramp, go over the Coolidge Bridge and continue on Route 9. Go through the lights in the center of Amherst. At the next set of lights turn left, onto South East Street. At the next light turn right onto Pelham Road. Pelham Road becomes Amherst Road in Pelham. Turn left onto North Valley Road (portions unpaved) across from the Library/Police & Fire Department. Turn left onto Buffam Road. Drive several miles, you will cross over into Shutesbury. Shortly after the Shutesbury town line you will take your first left onto Sandhill Road.*
From Greenfield, MA: - Stay straight on I-91 South. Take the US-5/Rt 10 exit – exit number 24 toward Whately/Deerfield. Turn left onto MA-10/US-5. Turn RIGHT onto Sunderland Rd/MA-116. Continue to follow MA-116 until you get to Route 9 in Hadley. STAPLES and APPLEBEES will be in front of you, turn LEFT on Route 9. Go through the lights in the center of Amherst. At the next set of lights turn left, onto South East Street. At the next light turn right onto Pelham Road. Pelham Road becomes Amherst Road in Pelham. Turn left onto North Valley Road (portions unpaved) across from the Library/Police & Fire Department. Turn left onto Buffam Road. Drive several miles, you will cross over into Shutesbury. Shortly after the Shutesbury town line you will take your first left onto Sandhill Road.*
From Orange: Follow DANIEL SHAYS HWY/US-202. Turn RIGHT onto Amherst Road at a flashing yellow light in Pelham. You will pass a church on your right. Once you see the Pelham Elementary School on your left you will turn right onto North Valley Road (portions unpaved) across from the Library/Police & Fire Department. Turn left onto Buffam Road. Drive several miles, you will cross over into Shutesbury. Shortly after the Shutesbury town line you will take your first left onto Sandhill Road.*
*Once on Sandhill Road you will travel approximately 1 mile. You will drive under some big power lines that cross the road - RIGHT after this you will park. You should see some boulders on the left side of the road at the entrance to a path.
Head down this path - as it slopes down and curves you'll want to stay to your right. You should hear a stream/gradual falls rushing up ahead, and soon see the remains of a stone chimney to your left. Continue on down the path. You'll soon see a pool at the bottom of the stream/falls. There is a hemlock, close to the waters edge, with a root system exposed that is all entwined. If you stand with this root system directly in front of you and turn behind you, you should see another hemlock. To the bottom left of this hemlock there is a rock jutting out - look here for Simon & Garfunkel.
