(Update as of 3.16.09: Please note that since the placing of this letterbox, the dog park has been closed. This should not interfere with the letterbox hunt, but please be aware of this if you decide to bring your dog.)

This letter box is located near the F. Gilbert Hills State Forest and the Cocasset River Dog Park.
It is an easy walk and should take about 30 minutes total. A compass would be helpful but you can probably find the box without it. A dog would also be great, but you can enjoy the area sans pet.

This is our first letterbox and we would like to dedicate it to our chocolate lab, Ruby, who loves to paddle and play with the other dogs at the park.

If you are taking your dog along for this letterbox hunt, please be sure to check out the website for the dog park for the hours and rules of the park.

Driving Directions:
From Route 1, take Thurston St in a southerly direction. Take a left on to Mill St.
Or, if you are coming from South Street in Foxboro, turn onto West Street, then a right turn on to Mill Street. You will see a sign for Gilbert State Forest. Shortly after you enter Mill Street, the road will turn left. Before you make the turn, you will see a large white pine tree on a small “island” on the right. Turn right into this area. This is the entrance to the Cocasset River Park. It does not have a sign, but you will know you are there if you see ball fields on the right. Drive past the fields and park in the rear parking lot at the dog park.

Clues:
Find the entrance to the Dog Park and walk past it for now (you may want to go later with your doggy). Head to the right hand corner of the chain link fence where you will see a narrow path. Follow this path along the outside of the fence. To the right, you will see a wooden foot bridge. Go over this bridge to the other side of the stream and up the knoll (Please note that the bridge has some loose and missing planks; beware!).

Once at the top of the knoll, you will find yourself overlooking what appears to be an old picnic area. Find the rusted BBQ grill on the right. Pick up a stick and pretend you are roasting a marshmallow. Now, with your stick, point it in a south-east direction approx. 160 deg. You’ll be continuing on a path near the BBQ.

Walk about 60 paces (2 steps= 1 pace) from the grill towards the south-east direction. Along the way, you will an embedded, pine-needle covered boulder on the left and then you will cross over a more defined path. Keep going to complete the 60 paces.

Look to the left, and you will see a big “flat-top rock”. Continue walking past this rock in a south-east direction. You will pass through some trees and come to a clearing with low scrub brush.

Stand in the approximate center of this clearing on the patch of ground that has less plants growing in it.

Walk in a south-west direction approx. 230 deg. and you will walk over a small rectangular flat stone in the ground, surrounded by moss. Continue walking in the same direction, and you will pass through and under some White Pine trees. You will see ahead of you a clump of boulders.

Walk up to the top of the small earth slope and turn to your left. You will see a big boulder with a deep overhang where it’s resting on a smaller boulder.

Look deep inside this crevice and you will find the “Soggy Doggy” Box.
After you have stamped in, please re-hide carefully.

To return to the dog park, you can go back the way you came, or you can continue up to the second small earth slope.

Go to the other side of the slope and follow the path that follows the ridge to the right. This path will get you back to “flat top rock” and the “picnic clearing”, and then back to the parking lot.

Now, make sure you take your dog for a swim in the Doggie Paddle Pond and bring home a "Soggy Doggy"!!

Have fun!
