The Springfield Reservoir is located on Rt. 21 in Ludlow, Mass. The parking lot is small but there is a side street a little ways down the road that you can park and walk up (be careful, traffic is fast on Rt. 21). The reservoir is open 7:30 am to 6:00 pm (the gate closes at 5:30) and is closed on Wednesdays.

The R Team set out on an adventure in 2008 to find a letterbox in Springfield Reservoir. We were so inspired by all the wildlife we saw, especially the many chipmunks running around, that we decided to make our very first letterbox and plant it here. We hope you enjoy the walk along the bike/walking trail as much as we do. This is an easy walk/bike ride. The only difficulty you might have is retrieving the box itself. There’s a restroom at the half mile marker but none after that. It's about a 1 1/4 mile walk to the letterbox.

Clues:
From the Springfield Reservoir parking lot, enter the paved trail. Follow the trail past the ½ mile marker (stop to use the restroom if necessary, it’s the only one you’ll come to). Right after you pass the ½ mile marker you’ll see the fishing dock on the right. Enjoy the view of the reservoir on your right and the woods on your left. Walk to the 1 mile marker and continue along the trail, along a curve and past a row of pine trees that stand on the right edge of the path. Look for a very large rock that sits on a hill in the thick woods on the left. It has a tree growing from the top of it. A short distance up ahead on the right is a very large rock with the words “Bill” and ‘Kenny Loves Carol’ spray painted on it. If the paint is faded you should still be able to find the rock. On the left side of the trail across from the graffiti rock is another very large rock covered with leaves. There’s a tree with five trunks in front of it. Face the leaf covered rock. To the left of the rock is a cluster of smaller rocks. The letterbox is hidden in a crevice in the back of these rocks. It’s covered with leaves, sticks and small rocks. The easiest way to get to the box is to walk up the left side between the fallen log and the rock cluster. It's a little steep so be careful. Please be discreet and return the box to its hiding spot and cover well.

Hint: You've gone too far if you come to a birch tree on the left with a blue spot painted on it.

Update 7/11/16: The box was inspected by the owner. The log book is full and will be replaced in the near future. Thanks for all the visits!
