Directions updated 11/ 23/23

Find your way to the Horse Caves along the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail. The easiest way is to go to the Notch Visitor Center on Rt 116 in Amherst. Pick up a trail map and follow the M-M trail (white blazes) to the Horse Caves. It took us about an hour and the hike is fairly strenuous even though it is only 1.6-ish miles.

The approach to the caves on the M-M trail leads you to a spot where the trail goes between two rocks and you have to climb down some rocks to stay on the trail. Once you climb down this narrow pass, this is where the caves are, as you are now below an overhanging rock ledge. At the base, walk along to the left on an unmarked path. As you walk, with the ledge above you and to your left you will pass a rock pillar with a small cave in the rock wall on your left. Walk about twenty steps further. Turn right, facing downhill, and take about ten-ish steps down the hill. You will see two rocks, one is larger and has moss on it. The other is smaller and has a pointed edge on top. Letterbox is under the right side of the smaller rock. Have Fun, Please rehide it well and be discreet as there can be several people around this popular hiking spot.
