This box was placed in celebration of our second anniversary, and incorporates two of our greatest passions, letterboxing & caving! Cavers, like Letterboxers, are a unique group of individuals who have the utmost respect for the environment, ecology, and preservation of these timeless wonders. Typically cavers don’t reveal the locations of caves, thereby protecting the ecology and integrity of these amazing sites; but Clough cave is a popular area and already marked by a known and well-traveled trail. Letterboxers and Cavers tend to be like-minded in both environmental friendliness and the desire for exploration. Therefore, we thought this would be a great opportunity to perhaps spark some people’s interests in caves, without the worry of irresponsible or destructive behaviors.

Unfortunately, over the years, many irresponsible youths have damaged most of the once pristine formations within the cave, started campfires for parties, and thereby greatly disturbed the biological balance within the cave. Fortunately, local grottos banded together and placed a steel gate approx 10 feet deep into the entrance, preventing any further damage to this natural wonder. Because of the gate placement, bats are once again thriving within and their guano (fecal matter) is once again littering the floor, which provides the essential nutrition needed for the troglodytes to once again flourish.

Like most novice letterboxers, the first book in our educational arsenal was “The Letterboxer’s Companion” by Randy Hall, the #1 selling Letterboxing book! This book will be needed for revealing key clues in the following directions to Clough Cave Letterbox.

This is a relatively short but steep hike, with seasonal poison oak, some rock scrambling, and not recommended for children or pets. PLEASE pack-out everything you pack in… leave only footprints!

Be sure to check-out the “Ladybug Letterbox” which is a beautiful hike off of the same trail! Have Fun!!!

DIRECTIONS:
Drive to the town of Three Rivers, heading East on Hwy 198.
Turn Right on South Fork Road, passing the fire dept station on your Right.
Make your way to the South Fork Campgrounds approx 13 miles down the road (about 10 miles paved & 3 miles dirt road).
Park at the East end of the campground, and you’ll find the trailhead for the “Ladybug Trail”.

After crossing a bridge, you’ll approach an enormous _______(Pg 78; 5th picture) on your _______ (Pg 51; last line, 3rd word). Follow the trail around this obstacle until you’re heading _______(Pg; 35; Last line; 4th word) bound. From here, count-off approx_______(Pg 20; first #) paces, stopping at a ________(Pg 42; 19th line; 1st word) round boulder on your ______(Pg 51; Last line; 3rd word). From here, turn ________(Pg 29; 29th word) and find the very faint trail heading up the hill. Continue on this narrow path bearing ________(Pg 15; the direction the word “dial” points to in the picture) hiking less than _______(Pg 54; 2nd line; the only number) mile. Follow the trail onto the rock ________(Pg 28; line 19; 9th word) which will gradually veer______(Pg 16; same direction of picture) and ends in a mass of _______(Pg 29; Line 19; 8th word). Climb up the _________(Pg 35; Line 2; 7th word) to your right. While facing _______ (Pg 17; Line 8; 1st word) you should now be staring into the small gated entrance of the Clough Cave. Your reward awaits you directly above the entrance on a rock ledge covered by rocks. Please use extreme caution when climbing.
