Every September, NW Portland’s Chapman elementary school is host to a range of 10,000-40,000 migrating Vaux’s swifts who temporarily roost in the school’s old chimney. On warm September evenings you can join the crowded school lawn at sunset to watch the swifts as they spiral down into the chimney for the night. It is truly a unique and awe inspiring spectacle, and I highly recommend it as an event for the whole family.
Find out more through the Portland Audubon Society’s swift watch website: http://www.audubonportland.org/local-birding/swiftwatch.

To the letterboxes…

Box 1: Swift
Look for the official Chapman school swift’s informational sign on the south side of the school near road. From this sign, look east for a three trunked tree also along the bordering Pettygrove street. You will find the swift nestled in this tree at the spot where the three trunks meet.

Box 2: School
Walk around to the front of the school and look for the small garden to the left of the front entrance. You can find this letterbox under the corner of the L shaped bench in a hole under a cement brick.

This is a very well travelled location, with lots of inquisitive and exploratory kids. With this in mind can’t say how long these letterboxes will last. Get them while you can.
