Curious Crow’s Cache on Crag Mountain
Crows love to collect and stash small shiny objects. I first became acquainted with this concept as a child reading Sterling North’s Rascal and started thinking about it again after acquiring my trail moniker. This is the first of a few caches commemorating small, shiny and often useful objects. This letterbox has a cache stamp which depicts Curious Crow’s stash of a few shiny items. It also contains a box of real objects, so if you are inspired, bring a little something small and shiny to trade. In addition, this is a Hitchhiker Hostel, and plenty big enough to hold a few. Please always keep at least 2 hitchhikers in this box.
To find the Crag Mountain Cache, you’ll need to travel deep into the Curious Crow’s home territory, a town apparently devoid of letterboxes until now. (More to come!) Plan on wearing sturdy shoes or hiking boots. This is a short hike, less than 1 mile to the cache, with a good scramble to get to a lovely place for a hiker’s lunch if you care to bring one.
Directions:
Find the place where the M&M Trail crosses South Mountain Road in Northfield. It is the highest point on the road so if you are driving up or down the road you are not there. White blazes will mark the otherwise un-signed spot. Park along the road and follow the white blazes north up a dirt driveway. Pass a large outcropping of rock on the right side as you start. Further up on the right the trail veers off the dirt drive and becomes a footpath through the forest. After about 5 minutes or so, the trail starts uphill steeply and becomes quite rocky. This is a short scramble to a rocky “summit” with views, first eastward toward Mt. Monadnock, then south with a view of Northfield Mountain and westward. To find the cache, continue onward following white blazes north back into the forest. At the third blaze on a tree (white pine) stop and notice a small knoll of rocks to the right. Follow a small side trail around the back and look for a short vertical face of rock. Hidden at the base under sticks and leaves you’ll find the cache.
