Glenn/Safari Man passed away in November of 2013. Somneone has logged this box on atlasquest.com as of 3/24/2014. Since it had a very old find date I hope you will not be afraid to hunt.

Beech Fork State Park
Park Map: http://www.beechforksp.com/beechfork.pdf

Directions: From Huntington, WV, I-64 exit 11 (Hal Greer Blvd. Exit)--Take Rt. 10 south. Continue approximately 4 miles turn right onto Hughes Branch Road and follow to the end. (another 4 miles). Turn left and the park is about 2 miles straight ahead. After entering the park turn right at the intersection/sign for the Park Office. You will pass the Control office. (stop if required and tell them you are going hiking at the Overlook Trail). Continue ahead until passing over the bridge, over the lake, and make an immediate right and park in the fishing and hiking parking spaces.

Difficulty: Moderate exertion with an elevation gain of probably 100 feet. (I am 60+ and not in great shape and had to take a few rests pauses while hiking up this path to the overlook....and forgot to bring my walking stick. I recommend a walking stick)
Time: 30-40 minutes round trip. Less if you are in good shape.
Distance: 1 mile round trip from car to quests.
Please bring your compass, stamp, a stamp pad, pen and an old rag to wipe off the box/your hands. Bug spray might come in handy in the summer months but I did not need it on 9/21/08.

CLUES

Box 1 J.W. (born May 28, 1938, in Chelyan, West Virginia, he is a retired basketball player who played his entire professional career for the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers. He has also had a successful career as a coach and as an executive. He was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980 and his left-handed dribbling silhouette has long been used in the National Basketball Association's official logo) Find the trail head for the Overlook and Long Branch trails across from the parking lot and follow the mowed path to the wooden bridge. Cross it and then find the Fire Pit circle. Cross through the Fire Pit Circle and head up hill to the Overlook Trail head. From the trail head sign count 90 steps up the path to a large flat rock in the trail, right after the two smaller flat rocks. Continue up the trail to a fork in the trail and turn right. A few steps further and you will come to a dead fall crossing the path. From the dead fall count 78 steps further and you will come to a 2 from 1 tree on the left. 4 more steps will take you to a 2 from 1 tree on your right. Look up and down the trail to make sure you are unobserved and when clear, from this tree take a heading of
~ (approximately) 305º, ~ 26 steps, to a large hardwood with a vine or two growing around it. Behind this tree, at its base, find J.W. under a rock and limbs. When done stamping, please reseal the baggie(s) completely and also the container and rehide as and where found.

Box 2 M.U.T.H. (Thundering Herd) Return to the path and continue uphill until reaching the large boulders I carried up here to conceal the next letterbox. Standing in the middle of the first large boulder, look out on a heading of ~ 150 º and see the beautiful mountains and the park swimming pool down below. (I now am tired of hauling boulders so will leave them here) Continue on up the path and a few steps past the second large boulder you will see a large, red blazed tree in the middle of the path. From here, count 58 steps to a bench on the right. Another beautiful view awaits you here. 74 to 77 more steps on the trail should bring you to a very nice looking 2 from 1 tree on the left about 12 steps up hill. Check to be unobserved from both directions on the trail and when clear, Go to the 2 from 1 tree up hill. From its back side at ~ 345º, ~ 19 more steps is the base of a dead fall. M.U.T.H. is located at this base under a small rock and some limbs. After stamping in, please reseal the baggies completely to prevent moisture from ruining the log book and return the letterbox to its place as and where found.

From here, I headed back as I came but the path does continue around and returns to the fire circle....how far that is, I do not know. I hope you enjoyed your hunt for these two boxes and will drop me a line about the condition of the boxes and any other constructive comments you might like to add. Cordially, Safari Man of Vincent, Ohio
