The Colebrook River Lake has always been a favorite place for me to kayak. The water is very high in the spring, making it an ideal kayaking spot with the possibility of going all the way to the iron bridge in Sandisfield, Ma.. As summer wears on, the water is gradually lowered to make room for spring run off (reducing the size of the lake by half or more) and one August day I paddled it with a friend. We were entranced when we came upon a large iron bridge jutting up out of the water near the west bank. This bridge is only visible during very low water and we didn’t see it today.
.
In the 1930's the M.D.C. began buying up land in the town of Colebrook River to provide water
resources for the future. 100 buildings were demolished or moved.. Bodies from cemeteries were moved to the new cemetery built on Eno Hill. The Colebrook River Dam was finished in 1969 forming a body of water four miles long and in some places over 100 feet deep.

To find this box go north on route 8 through Winsted. After approximately eight miles watch for a Boat Ramp sign on the right. This is 1.5 miles past the Colebrook River Lake sign. Go to the north end of the lot and start at the yellow gate.
If the gate is open, this is a drive by. If the gate is closed and the road is flooded it’s a paddle by. If the gate is closed but the water isn't over the road it's a four mile round trip walk.

From the gate drive (walk/paddle) for two miles. On the right (at low water) will be a paved road leading to a bridge abutment (not the bridge we want to see) park near here and walk a hundred feet north on the main road to a dirt road on the left. It looks like an excavating site. Walk up this road until you come to the southern end of a knoll of trees. Scramble up the southern end to find a tree that was once a two sister but one sister (after falling) has decided to grow up on her own. Look in the end that broke off from the other tree a long time ago. In a hole under a flat rock is the bridge you came for.

The bridge that's under water is eight tenths of a mile after the yellow gate. When you come to a grove of trees on the right start watching to your right for the top of the bridge. If it's above water you'll also have a good view of it on your way back.
