August 20, 2011 update -- the letterbox is alive and well, but a couple of finders pointed out that one of the books in the clues is no longer on the shelf. If you can guess that one letter, you can find the box. I will be updating the clues sometime soon to find a replacement clue for that one letter.

Maintenance note: Stamp re-carved and the box has been put back on the shelf as of August 7, 2010.

This box was planted by MAHiker and Monkeyface on 9/27/2008 and adopted by Leilani's Aunt on March 19, 2010. Both the original stamp and its replacement were carved by Monkeyface.

The clues as written by MAHiker
Another library letterbox! Check the hours of North Haven library before venturing out. It is open 6 days a week but shortened hours in the summer. http://www.leaplibraries.org/nhaven/

This letterbox is a book of fiction. The following clues will help you fill in the blanks for the author's last name. There are seven letters. You find the answers to the clues in the library!

First letter - walk up to the main floor past the main circulation desk into the reference room. Directly under the reference sign is a large Random House Dictionary (2nd edition) on a dictionary stand. Turn to page 1932. Fill in the letter on this page as the first letter.

Second letter - walk back to the stairs you came up. You will see a relief picture on the wall in the stairwell that shows the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Look at the plaque next to the picture. Look at the last name of who this picture is in memory of. The last letter of this person's last name is the second letter you seek.

Third letter - Now take a few steps toward the "down stairs" but don't go down - just look over the balcony to the floor below. What letter do you see after the star (near the elevator)? This is the third letter you seek.

Fourth letter - What is the name of the chairman of the building committee for this new library building? (see plaque near automatic doors). The first letter of his last name is the fourth letter you seek.

Fifth letter - Now go down to the Children's room and in the back left of this level is a special collection. It is called the Parent & _____________Collection. The first letter of the missing word is the letter you seek.

Sixth letter - Find reference book 032 - Guiness 2008. Page 143 __________Hall of Fame. First letter of missing word is the letter you seek.

Seventh & last letter - go to the very top floor and look for a technical services sign and under this sign is a smaller sign with two words. The last letter of the second word is the last letter you seek.

You should have a very famous author's last name. And the top floor is where the fiction books are found! Go to this author's books and find his novel whose title represents two opposites! There may be more than one copy, so be careful in selecting the correct one!

Hope you have fun with the search! This book is one of my son Nick's favorites.
