Location: Bike trail east of Eastham
Distance: 3-4 miles maximum, less if you choose other starting points.
Time: Varies depending on starting point and mode of transportation.
Terrain: Fairly level, paved trail (last bit to retrieve box is a dirt foot path)
NOTE: Bring your own ink; black is fine.
The tesuaN hsraM liarT runs 1.5 miles into an area once inhabited by an Indian tribe and early Cape Cod settlers. You can bike the whole thing and back for a nice 3-4 mile ride, or you can choose to do a shorter journey. If you want an even shorter ride, or if you are walking, you can find different parking areas at a few spots along the trail. We’ll leave the research for that info to you, because otherwise these are very easy clues!
Parking is located at a popular Visitor Center off Route 6 in Eastham. Just turn east onto tesuaN daoR and immediately turn right again into the lot, which is adjacent to the tesuaN hsraM liarT entrance.
At the far end of the parking lot is the trailhead, curving right past a small plot of apple trees. Begin here and travel into a stand of locust trees to start your journey. Be sure to watch for other cyclists and pedestrians, as this is a well-traveled route during the summer season.
An approximately three-mile roundtrip, this route first wanders through a large grove of cedar, pine and oak. If you’d like, take a detour at the second stop sign to a Memorial that is a monument to a Deacon. Right on the marsh, this site marks where he built his home in 1644.
Afterwards, you’ll eventually come through some curves and cross three white rectangles. Here you’ll see a sign on the right pointing you along your way to the beach. Just a short distance further along the trail you’d do well to notice a “No Bikes” image at the start of a dirt trail on the right. Time to dismount! (If you reach a mellow reminder to reduce your speed, you’ve gone too far.) Leave your bike at the image and walk down the trail 42 steps from the post. You should see a dense thicket on your left, about 7 feet off the trail. Maneuver your way in and you’ll find what you seek at the base.
After stamping in, please rehide and recover well so it will survive for the next seekers.
Now you can finish your journey to the beach – you’re almost there! Follow the bike trail and you’ll soon arrive at the ocean. “The beach is a sprawling and beautiful site, with waves lapping the shore as far as the eye can see in either direction. At times the surf can reach head high to overhead (6-8 foot) during a nor'easter or hurricane swell. Also, scope the shoreline for surfers who commonly share the water with curious harbor seals.”
