FAVORITE FEATHERED FRIENDS- a series of 3 letterboxes
Stamps beautifully carved by RTRW
Boxes placed by Catlover/Teacher/Gardener
(placed 10/4/08)

Directions to the boxes: River Park is located in Mansfield. For anyone interested, there is a well designed canoe/kayak launch area. From Rte 44, coming from Manchester, take a right onto Rte. 32. Drive .4 of a mile. Take a right onto Plains Rd. which is immediately after Depot Rd. Cross over the railroad tracks and park in the lot on the right.
*There are no ink pads in the boxes. Please bring colored markers.
CLUES:
From the parking lot, walk straight across the large field towards the woods to a signpost indicating the start of the trail. This trail is marked with white blazes. There is a short stretch of stone wall on your left. Follow the trail to the end of the wall. Go left off trail to a huge 5 sister wolf tree. “Blue Jay” is hidden in the tree’s center, surrounded by rocks and covered with bark and leaves.
Continue to follow the white blazes, crossing over a stream which flows intermittently. You’ll pass through an area with tall hemlocks. Upon coming to a T-intersection, turn left away from the white blazed trail. Cross over a small wooden bridge, then cross another small stream. The path curves right along the Willimantic River and ends. An orange sign marks the park’s boundary. After watching the world float by for a bit, turn around and return the way you came. In less than a minute you will come upon a short detour on your right. Take it. Just before rejoining the main path at the brown painted trail signpost, stop and look to your right for a multi-trunked tree. Stoop under its branches and look behind. “Chickadee” is hidden there, covered with bark and branches.
Continue back to the intersection, then stop. On your left, there is a 2-sister tree with double blazes and an arrow on it. Stand on to the right side of this tree. Walk 9 paces, (left foot count only). Look to your left behind a hemlock for a stump approx. 3 and 1/2 feet tall. “Woodpeckers” is hidden behind this stump in a nest of rocks, covered with bark and old chunks of wood.
After stamping in, follow the white blazed trail back to the field and your car. I hope you enjoyed this new Mansfield park.
