A nice hike on the blue blazed Narragansett Trail in Ledyard Ct. ending at a small scenic dam with fishing spot. Stay with the blue blazes through out the entire hike and you won't go wrong. The hike is about 3.75 miles total, on an out and back trek. There are a couple of small scrambles. This is the same trail as Jay Drew's 'Little Dam' series. (Most of the clues were ruthlessly stolen…ah…generously loaned with Jay's permission.)

Directions: On Ct Rte. 2, just South of the Mashantucket Pequot's Foxwoods Casino, turn West on Wintechog Hill Rd. Travel 0.8 miles, passing the trail and parking area for Lantern Hill, to the town dump entrance on your right. Flip a u-turn and park in a little pull out spot on the right (South) side of the road. On foot backtrack 100 feet to the blue blazed trail.

Follow the trail on the South side of the road generally Southeast. You'll dip and climb gently in hardwood and mountain laurel until you meet a stone wall on your left that abruptly ends. Continue on the trail as it turns Eastward along the hill. After about one quarter mile, you will cross an open area like an old forest road. After the open area, the trail passes through a North-South running wall. At the second well defined stone wall, there will be a very large two sister tree on your right (pass the wall) and a "T-Intersection" on your left. Pass through the wall and turn left. Seven paces and just before the "T-Intersection" low in the wall under flat rock that's under a pointy rock (in a natural alcove in the wall so no other rocks need to be moved.) The Rose Window Letterbox awaits at 41° 27.816N and 71° 55.392W.

Continue along the trail in the direction you were traveling. At the next well defined wall you pass through, stop just before you step over a fallen tree that crosses the trail. Look at the wall at 330° while sitting and relaxing on the fallen tree. Behind a rock door low in the wall. You only need to move the rock door to expose the box. The Spiral Window Letterbox awaits at 41° 27.835N and 71° 54.739W.

Continue walking along the blue blazed trail. When you cross a stream, continue down the trail but watch closely for a very large, deformed stump on the right of the path. On the North side of the stump is a diamond shaped rock. Under the Northern tip of the rock is a flat rock. Under the flat rock is the Window of Heaven Letterbox at 41° 27.745N and 71° 54.710W. (Thanks to RTRW for a great carving.) This is the last letterbox however Gallup Pond is a mere 10 more minutes down the trail, and the views are well worth taking a few minutes to go and see. If not just follow the blue blazes back to your car.

The trail soon descends and exits into a pretty field that is crossed by a power line. When you cross the field and follow the blue blaze you will emerge at Gallup Pond. There is a wonderful little dam and spillway that is crossed by a foot bridge. Take some time to explore here. It's a great spot for some photos. Again all you have to do is retrace your steps along the blue blazes to get to your car.

Thanks for visiting our boxes and have a great and safe hike.
