Gunpowder Falls State Park

MD Route-1, two miles north of Perry Hall
Park in the far parking section and look for the blue arrow marking the blue trail heading East.

As you head down the blue trail it will eventually run close to the river. There are several openings that lead down to the water. At one opening, you will find a large tree with a horizontal trunk that reaches out half way across the river. The almost flat trunk is ideal for pictures and perfect for even non-daring adventurers to crawl out on.

Once finding the spot, come back to the trail and walk back 30 paces in the direction from which you just came. You will see a narrow, unofficial path off to the right. Head up the path to see who Susan loves. Once you find out look left. About 4 feet ahead you will you see a narrow tree. Beneath its sprawling roots on a rock ledge you will find the first box.

Go back to the blue trail and continue on. Pass by the first yellow trail intersection and continue on till a stream crosses the path at the second yellow trail intersection. At this second intersection, turn left onto the yellow trail.

For those feeling adventurous, hop along rocks up the stream several yards till the rocks create a small dam across the stream. At that point you will see a path leading out off to the left.

Parents and less adventurous folks can follow along on a path while watching their companions. Follow the yellow trail to the first yellow blaze. The path will fork. Take the unmarked trail that follows the stream to the right. The trail will dip down into a deep valley (about 4 ft wide). Going down into the valley, you will see an easy access to the river to the right (where those coming upstream will come out). To the left you will see man-made brick wall lining both sides of the valley. Hidden in the walls lie the second box.

If you continue on the yellow trail it will loop around and put you back at the first yellow intersection you saw earlier on the blue trail. The path is a bit steep but beautiful.
