Vestiges of the Old West: Como Roundhouse

Welcome to Como, founded in 1871 by Italian immigrants and named for their original home. Como’s treasure was coal, not gold, but its big day came with the advent of the railroad. The Como Roundhouse served as the divisional repair shop, depot and railroad terminus. At one point, supporting 600 people in town.

To get to Como, take Hwy 285 north of Fairplay and south of Jefferson. Take the Boreas Pass Road into Como. You will see the Como Roundhouse on the right hand side, the last narrow gauge stone cut roundhouse in Colorado. At one time, the roundhouse supported 19 days. All but the 6 stone-cut bays burned to the ground, these 6 are currently undergoing restoration. The engine would be brought into the roundhouse and then turned and pointed in the correct direction.

After checking out the roundhouse; continue to follow the road around to the right. Notice the unusual two-story building on the left with the round second story turret. This was the Odd Fellows Hall. Continue past the Mercantile. At the Elevation 9796, turn left. Continue on to the stop sign and continue straight through the intersection. Stay to the right and go past the Como Civic Center on the left, originally the 1880’s school- house. You will have barb wire fencing on your right, turn right immediately after the fencing, heading E/NE. Continue all the way down to the asphalt pavement. Turn left (NE). When the pavement ends, set your odometer. Travel 1.6 miles and turn left onto a gravel road next to some tailings (mining leavings from dredging creek bottoms). Drive .1 mile to a grouping of 6 aspen trees on the left. Park your car here. Continue down the gravel path 65-70 paces to a large moss-covered boulder on your left. Backside spor.

Hope you enjoyed your tour of Como.
