Once upon a time there was a hungry Bass that liked eating insects more than worms and other fish. He loved flies and beetles, crickets and grasshoppers, but his favorite food was dragonflies. Most bugs lived in fear of him, but one dragonfly in particular dared to tease him and tried to lure him from his watery home. You can see for yourself how successful the dragonfly was at this by following the directions below:

These letterboxes are located near the Col. John Robinson School in Westford, MA. Roundtrip to both letterboxes is approximately one hour. Bring bugspray - there are mosquitos as you get closer to the water. And as always after a hike in the woods, check for ticks when you are done! These letterboxes were hidden by Ben (5.5 yrs) and Megan (4 yrs). We hope you have as much fun finding them as we did hiding them! UPDATE - JAN 9, 2010 - Megan confirmed both boxes are still in place. Unfortunately, the ink pad in the bass box got wet and ran, destroying the notepad inside and ruining the box itself, so it has been replaced with a new pad and book. The bass is back where you can find him and ready for visitors! Enjoy!

Letterbox #1 – The Hiding Dragonfly

Begin at the large rock at the end of “The Peaceable Playground”. Walk to the right of the tallest pine tree in front of you and find your trail. Follow the trail till it splits, and then bear to the right across the wooden bridge.

Turn right again on the far side of the bridge. Follow this trail until the stone wall to your right comes as close as it can to the trail. Continue on for another 10 steps, then turn left and follow this trail until you come to a circle of benches in the woods.

In the circle of benches, turn slowly around and look for the broken tree. It stands about 15 steps from the circle. The Dragonfly is hiding in its fallen half.

Letterbox #2 – The Leaping Bass

Return now to the circle of benches and continue back to where you left the trail. Continue on from where you first stopped and you will soon leave the woods to pass under a row of telephone lines before returning to the woods on the other side. Take a few more steps and you will arrive at the left field corner of a baseball field. Cross diagonally until you arrive at the right field corner of the field.

Leave the field and turn left at the edge of the trees. Follow along the narrow path below the field, staying just outside the trees. At the end of the field, the narrow path continues forward and to the right. Follow it till you once again find yourself at the telephone lines. Take the path to the right, down the hill. You will quickly return to the woods and after some time will find a rock wall crosses your path, then turns to run along side the path to your left.

After a while the trees will open up a bit to your right. Though it is partially hidden by trees, you may see a large, light-colored rock at the foot of the hill to your right. Walk a little farther down the trail until you see a 3-trunked tree on your left. Look toward the water for another broken tree. The Leaping Bass is nearby, stuck where he landed when he tried jumping from the water after the Dragonfly.

Now to return to the playground, return to the trail and retrace your path back up the hill to the telephone lines. This time at the telephone lines, bear to the right (the left trail leads back to the baseball field). You will soon come to the creek over which you had earlier crossed by the wooden bridge. In front of you now though is a bridge made from two logs.

If you are not so adventurous as to cross here, take the trail to your left as you face the logs and it will soon bring you back to the wooden bridge. Cross at the bridge and follow the trail to your left and you will soon find yourself out of the woods facing the playground and the large rock where you began.

If you choose to cross the log bridge, continue straight until you arrive at the soccer field. Turn left here and follow the edge of the fields before you, one after another, until you arrive at the school. The playground and the rock where you began are to your left.
