Edit 2-25-24: This box is unfortunately missing.

No porta potties, watch children at the start, and a great spot to let your dog run. Be aware that there are coyotes about!. Clues updated 10/10/15.

Well picking the name for this box was pretty easy. You probably remember that dumb mechanical singing bass that many folks had on their wall. Yep, the one that sang “Lead me to the River” or some such song.

We went on Atlas Quest and did a name search and found no other “Billy Bass” letterbox so we figured, heck we beat the Grumpy Grinch to this name. Now anyone that has found a few Grinch letterboxes know that the names they pick always have the first letters the same, so with that in mind here is one for the Grinch.

At the “T” intersection of Kernville Road and Sierra Way, head south on Sierra Way. You will pass the Kernville International Airport on your right; a left turn toward the Kernville Shooting Range and Camp 9 Campground on your right before heading up the hill. Check your mileage at the Camp 9 turn off, as the turn out is 7/10 on a mile on your right. (See alternate directions if you are staying at Camp 9)

Park in this turn out, which has an old cable gate strung across the edge of the road. I find it hard to believe anyone would drive down this steep area, but sometimes folks do strange things in the country.

You may find that there is no manicured trail, but that should not stop you as there will be no major bush whacking, just a walk along the lake’s edge.

Your destination will be near “Rocky Point” off in the distance, and while you won’t be going all the way to Rocky Point that is the general area you will be going to.

After parking, size up the steep area just next to the road as this will be your most difficult challenge. Take your time and watch your step. Once the steep area has been breached just head west along the lakeside.

Once you get near the first and smallest rock out cropping head uphill towards it. As you get closer look for an “Easter Island” type of rock, sans a face. This large boulder is standing out and away from the rock outcropping with a few other smaller boulders. It is flat fronted with an equally long monolith laying to its left side and a smaller monolith on its right side creating a slight enclosure. There are some sitting rocks behind the group.

Look behind the monolith and into the enclosure for the letterbox hidden under some movable rocks and debris.

Our dogs loved the freedom of running along the lake edge on the way to and from this letterbox.

Alternate directions from Camp 9. (A fee area)

We did not go to the location from this side of Rocky Point, but we feel pretty sure it can be used to find the box.

At Camp 9 (fee area) drive to the South end of the campground and you will find a small parking area near a locked gate. On this gate is a sign “No Vehicles past this point”. There is a dirt road that continues South toward Rocky Point and the road goes to a building (house?) and also continues over the saddle toward the letterbox. Once over the saddle you should not have any problem finding the rock outcropping closest to Sierra Way and the furthest from Camp 9. Below this out cropping you will find the monolith and the letterbox hidden in the enclosure.
