This box is planted in honor of Fergie and my annual trek to the Champlain Islands for Apple Fest, which celebrates 400 years of apple growing on the Islands. Held each year over Columbus Day Weekend, this annual “apple party” (as my friend’s 4-year old son likes to call it) boasts crafts, antiques, music, and of course scrumptious apple pie, apple crisp, candy and caramel apples, cider, and cider donuts!

To find this box, start by visiting Fergie at Allenholm Farm. She loves to be scratched behind her ears. Notice a line of 7 large sugar maple trees (8 if you count the stump) near the road. Follow this line of trees until you come to a hedgerow – a wire fence, split rail fence, shrubs and trees - dividing the Allenholm Farm property from another field on the other side of the hedgerow. Find the 8th (or 9th) large maple in the hedgerow and stand in front of it. Walk around to the back of this tree and you will see the split-rail fence. Stand under the maple tree and look up to the dead branch. Notice the bowl /bulge in the limb of the tree. Look closely above the bulge and under a piece of bark to find your prize.

Please be stealthy – there are lots of people, a house across the street, as well as a children’s school nearby. Please return and secure the box carefully, wedging it in the crook of the tree and place the bark over it.

Have fun!
