It is well known that letterboxing has helped many people with their
physical problems. This Trail of Fears series is designed to help deal with mental
ones as well. Some commonly occurring irrational hangups can be
overcome by employing the highly successful treatment known as
"encounter therapy". Compared to consulting a psychiatrist, you can
amortize the cost of your gas for letterboxing in one easy session.
Chelonaphobia, the fear of turtles, can also be vanquished by raising pet turtles of progressively larger sizes and nastier temperaments, but letterboxing is cleaner.
To get to the box turtle, get on the Cannon Valley Trail out of Red Wing toward Welch. Both sides of the path are lined by turtle ponds teeming with turtles most of the year. Please don't run over or step on any. Just a couple hundred paces to the west of Mile Marker 17 there'll be a bench on the north side of the trail. And about 10 paces from the bench toward the pond to the north you'll encounter a shell. Gently reach under it to obtain the box turtle. Bring your own ink pad.
Until Nov. 1 there is a $3/day or $20/year pass required for biking or rollerblading on the trail. Otherwise it's free.
