Difficulty: Moderate. Little over 7 miles, but mostly flat.

Opal Creek is an incredibly beautiful place, and many people worked hard to keep it from being logged several years ago. I placed the box in such a location that you should be able to nab it without walking over any plantlife. If you find your self stepping on plants, look elsewhere.

To the Box: From the gate, walk about 2.25 miles. On your right is a trail going over a bridge. Take it. Right after the bridge ends, the trail splits. Take the left (there should be a sign indicating that the hiking trail goes left). About 1.5 miles further, watch for the long skinny tree that has fallen over the width of the stream. The box is hidden on teh SE side of the big bundle of roots.

If you get to the Opal Pond turn off, you've gone a little too far.

To complete the loop, keep going straight. Soon, you'll see a turnoff for the Opal Pond overlook (check it out -- very cool. but don't fall in . . . ), and shortly after that is a bridge. Head over the bridge and start heading back home. You'll pass through the strangest little camping commune! Keep following the road, and you'll eventually get back to your car.

To the trailhead: Drive east from Salem on North Santiam Highway 22 for 23 miles to Mehama's second flashing yellow light. Opposite the Swiss Village Restaurant, turn left on Little North Fork Road for 15 paved miles, and an additional 1.3 gravel miles. At a fork, veer left on Rd 2209 past the sign "Road Closed 6 miles Ahead." Drive the 6 miles to the locked gate, and park on the side of the road. You'll need a permit. $5 at the gate, or from an outdoor store.
