Recently, I saw a stamp in the TX Tour Bus 2 by Gryzzled Gryphon called "Sugar Land Express", and it brought back a childhood memory that inspired this box. Ken Hall, the Sugar Land Express, was possibly the greatest high school football player ever. Playing quarterback in the single-wing formation for the Sugar Land Gators from 1950 to 1953, number 31 broke and set 17 national football records, many of which still stand today. His career prep rushing record of 11,232 yards and 32.9 points per game are still just as jaw-dropping today as they were 55 years ago. Though his career peaked in high school, he did eventually play professional football, first with the Baltimore Colts, then with the Houston Oilers in 1960, winning the first AFL championship. This is where my childhood memory comes in. While attending a Punt, Pass & Kick contest in 1961, I got to meet Ken, along with other Houston Oilers like Billy Cannon and George Blanda, and it was pretty exciting. Since I was too young to appreciate Ken's accomplishments then, I hope to honor him now with this box placed near his high school home on a street named after him.
Directions:
From Houston, drive about 20 miles southwest via Hwy 59 to Hwy 6 in Sugar Land. Exit and go north for about 1 mile to Brooks Street. Turn right and go about 1/3 mile to Ken Hall Blvd. Turn right and go 1 block to where it meets South Hall Drive with a gazebo by a lake in front of you. Park along this street.
Clues:
Walk to the big gazebo overlooking the lake and stop by the big tree on the right. Turn right and walk about 20 steps to two rows of large bushes. Duck under the front row bush and go to the second bush from the left on the back row (near an iron fence). The camo minibox is hanging from a branch on the back side 5 feet high. Please be discreet and replace as described.
