Scarborough in Patchaug

An interesting 2 part walk in the southern part of Patchaug State forest right on the border of CT & RI.
* Please Wear Orange During Hunting Season Sept. - Dec. *

You will need markers, & the logbook is at the very end of this Journey through time. Pack a lunch or snacks for a good 2-3 hr "Tour" with a little stamping, sight seeing and browsing.

Directions: From The North or South take Exit #93, Clarks Falls Exit / Ashaway. From North, take a Right at the end of the exit ramp,.. from the South, take a Left to a 4 way stop & straight through past the old "Republic Truck stop", Now "Stuckeys" & a Shell station. This is Denison Hill Rd. & you will be following this road for 6.1 or .2 miles. The road is paved, Then turns to "Pebble" paved & eventually DIRT. You Know you are getting closer to the forest when this turns to dirt. *Note all the crazy Cairns in the new built up section of this once lonely rd. You'll be going through a "White farmstead" when you are almost on State Land!! At 6.2 Mi. you should be at a "T" in the dirt road. GO LEFT, & downward around a couple of corners for aprox .2 mi. & you will notice a Green State Gate on your RIGHT.Park to the either side as not to block it. There is a bridge & stream right aside this gate. If you see a blocked in "Sand pit" You went 50 or so yds. too far. This is the first part of your Quest. Done in sequence, the theme will be cool in your Logbook.

WALK # 1:
This walk is straight forward, "out & back"
From the green gate, follow this nice wide path North, until you are abruptly stopped by what appears to be a very strongly built wall,... or is it? go Right, down along this wall, & you will see that it takes a sharp left and you will be up on top of this wall to see what it holds behind it. Stand somewhat near the main path that you came in on , while still up on the wall. Find the "Blue" blazed trail on your right facing the pond. (This is the lower end of "Greens Falls Pond") Locating the path, take 20 paces in to see a small Cairn, on top of a "triangular" shaped rock. 2 steps before it, is a two sistered maple with a leaning rock against it's base. Behind & underneath the rock is prize #1. After stamping,.. head off the wall & back on the main path back towards your car. When You start going in a downhill fashion about 1/2 way, on the main path, coming to the bottom of a "Sandy" / "Rocky BERM, pay attention to your LEFT for a very Flat Faced Triangular shaped rock. You will know it to be the right Rock, because there is a Leaning Tree right behind it with a very "Odd" & "Snakey" above ground root system at the base. I thought this was very cool.Turn around & go across path to a LARGE twin Maple behind a small Hemlock, in the hollow of it's base is prize #2. NO more Boxes on this stretch,... head back to your car for part two.

WALK # 2:
Another "out & back" walk, but interesting.
You will be going back up the road to that "T" you turned left at for the first walk, & taking a right on it now. This is the same long & lonely road you originally came in on. Aproximately 100 or so yds. up, there is a small parking "pull-off" on your right, just big enough for a car or truck and right next to a Huge Maple tree. (We backed in here for convenience.) 40 paces up the road is a Huge Oak tree with a boulder in front & a boulder blocking the "Main Path." Up in a tree is a sign "Closed to Motor Vehicles."
Follow this trail in an upward fashion, passing through a wall & then slightly down hill. on your right, you will notice a wall with alot of small White Pines behind it. follow the wall downhill a little more to reveal a very old Cemetery, "Palmer", "Newton" & "Main" were a few. Wish we could still read some of the real old ones way in the back! Anyway,.. from the entrance walk due north to the corner of the Cemetery wall and in the inside corner awaits another prize behind a few rocks. After poking around, head out & go Right down hill through a Laural lined section of path, continuing past some rather very large downed & dead twin White Pines on your right. A little further will reveal the Old Homestead foundation & farm. Go to the left side of this foundation there is a way to get in to explore. (*Note: I put a yellow tag in a sapling, just before the foundation ; this was the old well I found years ago) There are flat rocks on it now! So,.. going into the Foundation with the western wall on your left, go to the corner & turn around to see a "Cave" which I believe to have been the Hearth & Fireplace & the Pile of rock on top -The Chimney. Look under the Hearth behind smaller rocks for your last prize,... or is it ??? Retrace your steps the way you came to getback to your car. Hope you enjoyed this little "Tour de Patchaug". Getting back to your car,.. remember that you are driving past the path you just walked out of, to get back to 95.
Please let us know what you thought & any maintenance needed on these boxes!
